Haskell Pass
Haskell Pass, elevation 4300 feet, is a historically significant but now little-used mountain pass in northwestern Montana Montana () is a state in the Mountain West division of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west, North Dakota and South Dakota to the east, Wyoming to the south, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columb ..., between the Flathead and Kootenai River drainages. From 1892 to 1904 it was traversed by the original main line of the Great Northern Railway from Kalispell to Libby. This route was abandoned in favor of a longer but flatter route via the Stillwater, Tobacco, and Kootenai Rivers. On the west side of the pass, much of the gravel Pleasant Valley Road lies atop the old roadbed. Near the summit, little evidence remains of the railroad with part of the 1400 feet summit tunnel having collapsed. Kalispell (, Montana Salish: Ql̓ispé, Kutenai language: kqayaqawakⱡuʔnam) is a city in, and the county seat of, Flathead County, Montana, United States. The 2020 census put Kalispell's population at 24,558. In Montana's northwest region, it is the largest city, and the commercial center, of the Kalispell Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Kalispell is a Salish word meaning "flat land above the lake". History Using his own capital, Charles Edward Conrad, a businessman and banker from Fort Benton, Montana, formed the Kalispell Townsite Company with three other men. Libby is a city in northwestern Montana, United States and the county seat of Lincoln County. The population was 2,775 at the 2020 census. Libby suffered from the area's contamination from nearby vermiculite mines contaminated with particularly fragile asbestos, leading to the town's inclusion in the United States Environmental Protection Agency's National Priorities List status in 2002 and Public Health Emergency event in 2009. Marion is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Flathead County, Montana, United States. Its population was 886 as of the 2010 census. Marion has a post office with ZIP code 59925. The Great Northern Railway created Marion in 1891 as the terminus of a short spur line that ran west from Kalispell. Between 1892 and 1902, this would be part of the Great Northern Main Line between Columbia Falls and Libby through Haskell Pass. The post office in Marion was established in 1892. Located just off of U.S. Route 2, Marion is 21 miles from Kalispell. The town is next to Little Bitterroot Lake. The railroad between Kalispell and Marion was abandoned in the late forties.
