Harzgerode is a town in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Geography Harzgerode lies in the lower eastern part of the Harz mountain range on the Selke River, south of Quedlinburg. Selke Valley Railway
The Selke Valley Railway (''Selketalbahn''), ''Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway'' (''Gernroder-Harzgeroder Eisenbahn'') and the ''Anhalt Harz Railway'' (''Anhaltische Harzbahn'') were different names for the metre gauge railway in the Lower Harz, Germany, originally owned by the Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company (''Gernrode-Harzgeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft'', GHE). It is now only known as the ''Selke Valley Railway''. This has included the Quedlinburg–Gernrode line since 2006. It continues through Alexisbad to Hasselfelde and includes the Alexisbad–Harzgerode branch and the Stiege– Eisfelder Talmühle connecting line. House Of Ascania
The House of Ascania (german: Askanier) was a dynasty of German rulers. It is also known as the House of Anhalt, which refers to its longest-held possession, Anhalt. The Ascanians are named after Ascania (or Ascaria) Castle, known as ''Schloss Askanien'' in German, which was located near and named after Aschersleben. The castle was the seat of the County of Ascania, a title that was later subsumed into the titles of the princes of Anhalt. Alexisbad
Alexisbad is a small spa town, part of Harzgerode in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Geography Alexisbad is located about northwest of the Harzgerode town centre on the Bundesstrasse 185 road to Ballenstedt. It is situated in the valley of the Selke river and its Schwefelbach and Friedenstalbach tributaries, in the lower eastern outskirts of the Harz mountain range, about above sea level. The settlement is surrounded by the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park. In earlier years, the spa town was known for its medicinal waters, of which the Alexisbrunnen, an iron-rich spring, is used for drinking water, while the Selkebrunnen supplies the baths. Straßberg, Saxony-Anhalt
Straßberg is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 August 2009, it is part of the town Harzgerode. Straßberg is located in southeastern part of the Harz mountains, 20 km south of Quedlinburg, 22 km northeast of Nordhausen and 23 km northwest of Sangerhausen. History Straßberg was mentioned for the first time in the chronicle for the district of Sangerhausen in 1194 as ''Strazberc''. From 1400 mining became the main livelihood for the villagers of Straßberg. Mägdesprung
Mägdesprung is a village in the municipality of Harzgerode in the district of Harz. It nestles in the Harz Mountains at a height of 295 m. History There was a mill here below the ''Mägdetrappe'' until the Thirty Years' War. In 1646 an ironworks was built on the initiative of Frederick of Anhalt-Harzgerode that was not very successful to begin with, nevertheless it was considerably expanded in 1769. Until the second half of the 19th century the works proved very profitable in the field of decorative castings. Its furnace was finally closed in 1876. On 7 August 1887, a railway line from Gernrode to Mägdesprung was opened by the Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company (GHE), today the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways. On 18 April 1945 the pattern house (''Modellhaus'') of the factory fell victim to the fighting at the end of the Second World War. Neudorf, Saxony-Anhalt
Neudorf is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 September 2010, it is part of the town Harzgerode. History The village was established in 1530/31 in the district ('' Amt'') of Bärenrode by the counts of Stolberg, but soon thereafter was transferred to the princes of Anhalt-Bernburg. The first village houses were erected on the present day Church Square (''Kirchplatz''). Farm workers were the first to settle here. They soon built a small church and, in 1542, received the first Evangelical priest. The Thirty Years' War devastated the peaceful village. In 1806 there were 58 houses with 370 inhabitants who lived off farming, cattle breeding, coal transportation and woodcutting. Silberhütte (Harzgerode)
Silberhütte is a village in the town of Harzgerode in the district of Harz in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Its name means "silver works", a place where silver ore is smelted. Geography Silberhütte lies in the Selke valley of the Lower Harz. History The first recorded mention of Silberhütte dates to the year 1692, which is also the year the place was founded. Hitherto there had been a silver works at this site and several stamp mills, where ore won from the surrounding mines was processed. The artificial channel built to supply water to the works (from 1904 known as the ''Silberhütter Kunstgraben'') is the longest in the Lower Harz Pond and Ditch System at 25.5 km. Ore was processed all year round in four smelting furnaces, two sulphur furnaces and a vitriol works. The smelter produced up to 1.6 t of silver and 870 t of lead annually. Güntersberge
Güntersberge () is a village and a former town in Harz District, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It holds the status of an officially recognized resort town since 2001. Güntersberge, together with the other municipalities of the former ''Verwaltungsgemeinschaft'' ("collective municipality") Unterharz, merged into the town of Harzgerode as of 1 August 2009.
