Harvey Smith (showjumper)
Harvey John Smith (born 29 December 1938) is a former British show jumping champion. Smith was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and still maintains his stables at Craiglands Farm, High Eldwick, Bingley, near Bradford. He stood out from the ranks of showjumpers because of his broad accent and blunt manner. His career was often controversial: in 1971 he was disciplined (overturned on appeal) after he gave a "V sign" to the judges following a near-perfect round which won him the British Show Jumping Derby for the second year in succession; this act also earned him a 'tongue-in-cheek' part in an advert for Victory V sweets with the slogan 'They've got a kick like a mule!' The expression "Doing a Harvey Smith" entered the English language for giving a V sign. Smith became so famous that he embarked on a brief, but unsuccessful, singing career. Equestrian At The 1984 Summer Olympics
The equestrian events at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics included show jumping, dressage and eventing. The equestrian sports were held primarily at Santa Anita Racetrack, which offered stabling for up to 2100 horses, a grandstand with almost 16000 seats, and was managed by experienced horsemen. Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in San Diego County hosted the endurance portions of the three-day event. Horses were required to be at least six years old. Up to 14 riders and 22 horses were permitted per country. 2013 Grand National
The 2013 Grand National (officially known as the John Smith's Grand National for sponsorship reasons) was the 166th annual running of the Grand National horse race at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England. The showpiece steeplechase, which concluded a three-day meeting (one of only four held at Aintree throughout the year), took place on 6 April 2013. The maximum permitted field of 40 runners competed for a share of the £975,000 prize fund, which made the National the most valuable jump race in Europe. The race was won by 66/1 shot Auroras Encore, who was ridden by jockey Ryan Mania for trainer Sue Smith. The 11/2 favourite Seabass, ridden by Katie Walsh, finished in 13th place. During the race only two horses fell and six unseated their riders; 17 completed the course and all 40 that ran returned safely to the stables. Auroras Encore
Auroras Encore (foaled 10 March 2002) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2013 Grand National. In a racing career which lasted from February 2007 until January 2014 he won two hurdle races and six steeplechases from forty-seven starts. Background Auroras Encore is a bay gelding bred in Ireland by the Mountarmstrong Stud. His sire Second Empire won the Grand Critérium in 1997 and started second favourite for the following year's Epsom Derby. The best of his offspring to date has probably been the Victor Chandler Chase winner Somersby. Auroras Encore was offered for sale at the Tattersalls Ireland sale in September 2003 where he was bought for €7,000 by Frank Barry. Two years later the gelding was auctioned at Doncaster and was sold for 9,500 guineas to Harvey Smith the husband of the trainer Sue Smith. Sue Smith (born Sue Maslen on 23 February 1948) is a British people, British horse trainer. Background Smith was originally from West Sussex. Her father owned racehorses at the time and she would ride them out at Epsom. She had the distinction of participating in Britain's initial ladies' race. In her youth, she was an international show jumper. Training Smith trains at Craiglands Farm near Bingley Moor, in West Yorkshire. The farm consists of 150 acres and facilities for 55 horses. Her first winner came in 1990 when African Safari won a three-runner chase at Ascot Racecourse, Ascot. He had been purchased at the Ascot Sales for 4,300 guineas. Professional wrestling is a form of theater that revolves around staged wrestling matches. The mock combat is performed in a ring similar to the kind used in boxing, and the dramatic aspects of pro wrestling may be performed both in the ring or—as in televised wrestling shows—in backstage areas of the venue, in similar form to reality television.
