Harvey Smith (Canadian Politician)
Harvey Smith (November 6, 1936 – March 12, 2017) was a Canadian politician who served on Winnipeg's city council and in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, grew up in Winnipeg and first became involved in politics at the age of twelve. He joined the British Columbia Social Credit Party when it was still a fringe organization. Smith obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and history from the University of British Columbia, a Bachelor of Education from Simon Fraser University and worked as a teacher in Birtle, Manitoba. He sought the Progressive Conservative nomination for a February 1969 provincial by-election in the Birtle-Russell electoral division, but lost to Harry Graham. He later became involved with the New Democratic Party (NDP). He was elected to the Winnipeg City Council in 1980 for the division of Sargent Park, retaining his seat until 1986. Harvey John Smith (born 29 December 1938) is a former British show jumping champion. Smith was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and still maintains his stables at Craiglands Farm, High Eldwick, Bingley, near Bradford. He stood out from the ranks of showjumpers because of his broad accent and blunt manner. His career was often controversial: in 1971 he was disciplined (overturned on appeal) after he gave a "V sign" to the judges following a near-perfect round which won him the British Show Jumping Derby for the second year in succession; this act also earned him a 'tongue-in-cheek' part in an advert for Victory V sweets with the slogan 'They've got a kick like a mule!' The expression "Doing a Harvey Smith" entered the English language for giving a V sign. Smith became so famous that he embarked on a brief, but unsuccessful, singing career. Harvey Smith (born 1966) is an American video game designer and writer, working at Arkane Studios. Smith has lectured in various places around the world on topics such as level design, emergent gameplay, leadership, game unit differentiation, future trends and interactive narrative. At the Game Developers Conference in 2006, Smith won the Game Designer's Challenge: ''Nobel Peace Prize'', for his design featuring a mobile video game that facilitates political social action. Early life Smith was born and raised on the Texas Gulf Coast. He grew up playing games like ''Pong'' as well as ''Dungeons & Dragons''. He read books by Ursula K.
