Harvey L. Price
Harvey L. Price (October 15, 1914 – March 26, 2005) was a career professional Scouter in the Boy Scouts of America, and was appointed the sixth Chief Scout Executive of the BSA National Council, serving from 1976 to 1979. Early life Harvey Price was born near Ossian, Indiana, one of seven children who grew up on his family farm. He graduated from Lancaster High School and earned his college degree from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana Scouting professional Price began his BSA professional service in 1937. He rose through the ranks, serving in a number of roles, including Scout executive of the San Francisco Counci(1962–1964), the San Francisco Bay Area Council headquartered in Oakland (1964–1969) and the Los Angeles Area Council (1969–1976) in Los Angeles. The Boy Scouts of America (BSA, colloquially the Boy Scouts) is one of the largest scouting organizations and one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with about 1.2 million youth participants. Chief Scout Executive
The Chief Scout Executive is the top professional of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In most similar non-profit organizations, this is equivalent to the position of CEO, national executive director or secretary general. Roger Mosby is the current Chief Scout Executive, succeeding Michael B. Surbaugh in December 2019. Mosby was initially title President and CEO (not being a professional Scouter), however in May 2021 Mosby received a commission as a professional Scouter and was appointed to the Chief Scout Executive position in May 2021. Ossian, Indiana
Ossian is a town in Jefferson Township, Wells County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The town was named after Ossian, the narrator of a cycle of epic poems by the Scottish poet James Macpherson. The population was 3,289 at the 2010 census. History The Ossian post office has been in operation since 1850. In 1843, Indiana State Road 1 was made serviceable from Fort Wayne to Bluffton. Wabash College is a private liberal arts men's college in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Founded in 1832 by several Dartmouth College graduates and Midwestern leaders, it enrolls nearly 900 students. The college offers an undergraduate liberal arts curriculum in three academic divisions with 39 majors. The Boy Scouts of America is an organization run by volunteers, however the day-to-day administration is performed by a staff of professional (or career) Scouters. The organization has professional staffing at every level—district, council, regional and national. The Chief Scout Executive is the top professional Scouter. The commissioner position is the second oldest in Scouting (Scoutmaster is the oldest) and is the origin of the professional Scouting positions, which is why position insignia of the professional Scouter have the ''wreath of service'' as a feature on all professional position patches. William Hillcourt
William Hillcourt (August 6, 1900 – November 9, 1992), known within the Scouting movement as "Green Bar Bill", was an influential leader in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) organization from 1927 to 1992. Hillcourt was a prolific writer and teacher in the areas of woodcraft, troop and patrol structure, and training; his written works include three editions of the BSA's official '' Boy Scout Handbook'', with over 12.6 million copies printed, other Scouting-related books and numerous magazine articles. Hillcourt developed and promoted the American adaptation of the Wood Badge adult Scout leader training program. Hillcourt was Danish, but moved to the United States as a young adult. ''Boy Scout Handbook'' is the official handbook of Scouts BSA. It is a descendant of Baden-Powell's original handbook, ''Scouting for Boys'', which has been the basis for Scout handbooks in many countries, with some variations to the text of the book depending on each country's codes and customs. The handbook opens by introducing the Scout Oath, The Scout Motto, The Scout Law, the Scout Slogan. The original edition of the handbook was based on Baden-Powell's work. Order Of The Arrow
The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), composed of Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives as elected by their peers. The society was created by E. Urner Goodman, with the assistance of Carroll A. Edson, in 1915 as a means of reinforcing the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. It uses imagery commonly associated with American Indian cultures for its self-invented ceremonies.
