Hartman Longley
Sir Hartman Godfrey Longley (born February 24, 1952, in Nassau, Bahamas) is the former Chief Justice of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas having been sworn on February 2, 2015. Education Longley received his early education at the Government High School, Nassau, Bahamas, graduating in 1966. Career Sir Hartman was called to the Bahamas Bar on October 6, 1976. He served as assistant counsel in the Attorney General's chambers from 1976 and 1978. He also served as a magistrate in Nassau and Freeport, from September 1993 to July 1995 and held the position of chief magistrate. Chief Justice Of The Bahamas
The Chief Justice of the Bahamas heads the Supreme Court of the Bahamas. Legal basis The position of Chief Justice is authorised by Article 93(2) of the Constitution of the Bahamas. Under Article 94(1), the Governor-General appoints the Chief Justice on the recommendation of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition. Removal of the Chief Justice is governed by Article 96(6); the Prime Minister recommends removal to the Governor-General, who then forms a tribunal of at least three members selected by the Governor-General in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister. Under Article 98(2), the Chief Justice may be invited to sit on the Court of Appeal by the President of that Court. Government High School is a state secondary school in Nassau, Bahamas. At one time, it was a selective grammar school and one of the country's leading institutions. Freeport, Bahamas
Freeport is a city, district and free trade zone on the island of Grand Bahama of the northwest Bahamas. In 1955, Wallace Groves, a Virginian financier with lumber interests in Grand Bahama, was granted of pineyard with substantial areas of swamp and scrubland by the Bahamian government with a mandate to economically develop the area. Freeport has grown to become the second most populous city in the Bahamas. The main airport serving the city is the Grand Bahama International Airport, which receives domestic flights from various islands of the Bahamas as well as several international flights from the United States and Canada. Freeport is also served by domestic Bahamian ferry services to other islands. Supreme Court Of The Bahamas
The Supreme Court of the Bahamas is the third highest court in the adjudicative hierarchy of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The court was created by Article 93(1) of the Constitution. Before that, the Supreme Court was governed by the Supreme Court Act of 1896. The Neo-Georgian style building which is home to the Supreme Court in New Providence is located on Bank Lane. Ground was broken for the building in 1921 by then Governor of the Colony of the Bahamas, Sir Harry Cordeaux.
