Hart Benton Holton
Hart Benton Holton (October 13, 1835 – January 4, 1907) was an American politician. Born near Elkton, Maryland, Holton attended the common schools and Hopewell Academy of Chester, Pennsylvania. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1857 and taught school in Alberton, Maryland, from 1857 to 1873. He served in the Maryland State Senate from 1862 to 1867, and later moved to Woodlawn, Maryland in 1873, where he engaged in the raising of blooded horses. Holton was elected from the fifth district of Maryland as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, and served from March 4, 1883, to March 3, 1885. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1884 to the Forty-ninth Congress and retired from public life, at which point he took up an interest in raising horses. Andrew Grant Chapman
Andrew Grant Chapman (January 17, 1839 – September 25, 1892) was an American politician. Chapman was born in La Plata, Maryland. After being tutored at home, he attended the Charlotte Hall Academy of St. Mary's County, Maryland. He graduated from St. John's College of Annapolis, Maryland, in 1858, and graduated in 1860 from the law department of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1860, was admitted to the bar the same year, and commenced practice there. In 1864, Chapman moved to Port Tobacco, Maryland, and continued the practice of law and engaged in agricultural pursuits Chapman was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1867, 1868, 1870, 1872, 1879, and 1885. He was appointed aide and inspector with rank of brigadier general in 1874 on the staff of Governor James Black Groome, and was reappointed by Governor John Lee Carroll. The Governor of the State of Maryland is the head of government of Maryland, and is the commander-in-chief of the state's National Guard units. Barnes Compton
Barnes Compton (November 16, 1830 – December 2, 1898) was a Representative of the fifth congressional district of Maryland and a Treasurer of Maryland. Early life Barnes Compton was born on November 16, 1830 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland to Mary Clarissa (née Barnes) and William Penn Compton. His parents both died when he was young, and he was raised until 1843 by his grandfather, John Barnes. He attended the Charlotte Hall Military Academy in St. Mary's County, Maryland for his formal education, and graduated from Princeton College with a Bachelor's degree in June 1851. At a young age, he became the second largest slaveholder in Charles County. Career After college, Compton returned home and engaged in agricultural pursuits and as a planter.
