Harry White (Australian Politician)
Harry Owen White (11 February 1898 – 2 October 1946) was an Australian politician. He was a United Australia Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1932 to 1943, representing the electorate of Bulla and Dalhousie. White was born in North Melbourne, and attended Ascot Vale State School. He served in the armed forces in World War I, initially with the Royal Australian Artillery at Queenscliff, and later in France with the siege battalion, where he transferred to the Royal Air Force and Australian Flying Corps. He subsequently worked as an engineer before entering politics. White was elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 1932 state election, defeating incumbent Labor MP and future federal minister Reg Pollard. He was re-elected in 1935, 1937 and 1940, defeating future state MP Charlie Mutton on each occasion. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. Electoral District Of Bulla And Dalhousie
Bulla and Dalhousie (also referred to as Bulla-Dalhousie) was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was created in 1927 with the merging of the previous districts of Bulla and Dalhousie, and was abolished in 1945, with most of the territory going into the new Mernda seat. It was a rural electorate on the outskirts of Melbourne, and at its abolition included Broadmeadows, Gisborne, Lancefield and Sunbury. Fawkner Cemetery
Fawkner Memorial Park is located in the north-western Melbourne suburb of Fawkner, Victoria, Australia. It is the largest cemetery by land size in the state, and managed by Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. Merlynston Creek, a tributary of Merri Creek, is a major geographical feature running through both Fawkner Cemetery and the Northern Memorial Park. History In 1906, the Municipal Cemetery, Fawkner (as it was then called) opened to meet the needs of the north west. The cemetery was designed and run by Charles Heath, a surveyor and architect. The first burial took place on 10 December 1906. This was considered to be the unofficial opening of the cemetery. The funeral was conducted by John Allison from Sydney Road. Reginald James
Reginald Alfred John James (1 June 1893 – 27 September 1944) was an Australian politician. He was a Country Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1943 to 1944, representing the electorate of Bulla and Dalhousie. James was born in America, and lived his early years in Swan Hill. He served in World War I in France with the 29th battalion, and returned after the war to his family's dairy farming and grazing property at Garfield. He also later owned a chain of milk bars in Melbourne.
