Harry Thompson
Harry William Thompson (6 February 1960 – 7 November 2005) was an English radio and television producer, comedy writer, novelist and biographer. He was the creator of the dark humour television series ''Monkey Dust'', screened between 2003 and 2005. Born in London, Thompson was educated at Highgate School and Brasenose College, Oxford, then joined the BBC as a trainee in 1981. He soon focused his attention on comedy, working as a researcher for ''Not the Nine O'Clock News'' and BBC Radio's ''The Mary Whitehouse Experience''. Rising to the level of producer, he produced the BBC radio shows ''The News Quiz'' and '' Lenin of the Rovers''. Hat Trick Productions subsequently employed Thompson to produce a television adaptation of ''The News Quiz'', entitled '' Have I Got News For You'', a critical and commercial success which Thompson produced for five years before moving onto other projects. Harry Thompson (29 April 1915 – 29 January 2000) was an English professional footballer who played for Mansfield Town, Wolves and Sunderland. He later became the first professional manager of Oxford United. Playing career Born in Mansfield in 1915, Harry played for his local side Mansfield Town before joining Wolves. Later in his career, he signed for Sunderland for £7,500. After making 14 appearances for the Black Cats, including an FA Cup semi-final, Thompson retired from football. Oxford United In 1949 Thompson was signed as Oxford United manager. He managed the club for 9 years, winning the Southern League and the Southern League Cup twice. William Henry Thompson (1885–1947) was an English radical lawyer closely involved with trade unions, who founded Thompsons Solicitors. From the 1920s he was associated with the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). He was married to Joan Beauchamp, a prominent suffragette. Early life He was the son of William Henry Thompson (c.1830–1904), a warehouse owner who ran a wholesale grocery business in Preston, Lancashire and Methodist, and his wife Martha née Thompson (died 1920); he was the younger son in a family of five girls and four boys. His maternal grandfather John Thompson was a Cumbrian, who prospered in Preston and was also a radical. His sister Constance Sumner Thompson was a schoolmistress and mother of A. J. P. Taylor. According to Taylor, Harry was the brightest child in a family of six, but a "clever-clogs". Margaret Cole described him as "a tall handsome athletic fellow, excelling in all games".
