Sir Henry Hamilton Johnston (12 June 1858 – 31 July 1927), known as Harry Johnston, was a British explorer, botanist, artist, colonial administrator, and linguist who travelled widely in Africa and spoke many African languages. He published 40 books on African subjects and was one of the key players in the Scramble for Africa that occurred at the end of the 19th century. Early years Born at Kennington Park, south London, the son of John Brookes Johnstone and Esther Laetitia Hamilton. He attended Stockwell grammar school and then King's College London, followed by four years studying painting at the Royal Academy. In connection with his study he travelled to Europe and North Africa, visiting the little-known (by Europeans) interior of Tunisia. Harry Johnston (surveyor)
Harry Frederick Johnston (1853 – June 1915) was Surveyor-General of Western Australia from 1896 to 1915. Harry Johnston was born in 1853, as a grandson of Marshall Waller Clifton. He qualified as a surveyor. In 1884, he led a surveying expedition to the Kimberley region of Western Australia. A geologist who was attached to the group, Edward Hardman, was one of the first to discover gold in the area, and his report and maps became a valued resource in the subsequent Kimberley gold rush. In January 1885, Johnston made a claim for a reward offered by the Government of Western Australia for the discovery of the goldfield. He was widely criticised for what was seen by many as "Mr. Johnston's attempt to filch the credit." However Johnston later stated "All I wished was that my claim as a leader of the party and discoverer of new country should not be overlooked." Harry Allison Johnston II (December 2, 1931 – June 28, 2021) was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat from Florida. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives and was a member of the Democratic Party. Early life and career Johnston was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. He attended the Virginia Military Institute, and he became a lieutenant in the United States Army after graduating. Once he was discharged, he entered the University of Florida and earned his law degree. In 1974, Johnston was elected to the Florida Senate. With the Democrats in control of the body in the 1980s, Johnston rose to the rank of President of the Senate. In 1986, he sought the Democratic nomination for Governor of Florida, but lost in a close primary race. Congress Johnston was elected to Congress in 1988. Henry Johnston (26 September 1919 – 12 October 1973) was an English footballer. He was the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in 1951. He spent his entire professional playing career with Blackpool, with whom he appeared in three FA Cup Finals, winning one. Harry Grant Forsyth Johnston (born 24 December 1949) is a Scottish retired footballer who played as a midfielder, featuring briefly in the country's top division for Partick Thistle between longer spells with Montrose. He is also a former cricketer who played first-class matches for Scotland in 1975 and 1981. Harry Bruce Johnston (November 5, 1883 – January 20, 1943) was a Canadian politician, who served in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Early life Harry was born on November 5, 1883, to James Johnston and Mary Victoria Ross in Teeswater, Ontario, where he completed his secondary education. In 1906, he arrived in Arrowhead, British Columbia, becoming a merchant. By 1905, Edward McGaghran owned a general store, carrying a wide range of products. The next year, Jessie Whitbread became an employee, and Harry Johnston became a partner in the renamed McGaghran & Johnston store, which expanded into men's furnishings, while retaining a groceries line. McGaghran, who trained as a millwright, was superintendent of the Arrow Lakes Lumber Co mill at Arrowhead at the time of his death in 1912. In 1918, Johnston expanded into the lumber business.
