Harry Harrison (architect)
Harry Harrison was an architect in Los Angeles, California. He designed the Modern Architecture style Chips coffee shop, an example of Googie Architecture. Harrison also design the Ritts Furniture building on Santa Monica Boulevard east of La Cienega Boulevard. It is now being used as the Hollywood Stock Exchange headquarters. Harrison also designed 1120 St Ives Place (1948) in Los Angeles for Hyman Engleberg, Marilyn Monroe's personal doctor. Googie Architecture
Googie architecture ( ) is a type of futurist architecture influenced by car culture, jets, the Atomic Age and the Space Age. It originated in Southern California from the Streamline Moderne architecture of the 1930s, and was popular in the United States from roughly 1945 to the early 1970s. Googie-themed architecture was popular among roadside businesses, including motels, coffee houses and gas stations. The style later became widely known as part of the mid-century modern style, elements of which represent the populuxe aesthetic, as in Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal. The term ''Googie'' comes from the now-defunct Googies Coffee Shop in Hollywood designed by John Lautner. Similar architectural styles are also referred to as Populuxe or Doo Wop. Harwell Hamilton Harris, (July 2, 1903 – November 18, 1990) was a modernist American architect, noted for his work in Southern California that assimilated European and American influences. He lived and worked in North Carolina from 1962 until his death in 1990. Biography Harris was born in Redlands, California in 1903. He began his studies at Pomona College but left after a year to study sculpture at the Otis Art Institute, now Otis College of Art and Design. In 1928, he began apprenticing under architect Richard Neutra with whom he was associated until 1932. He worked alongside Gregory Ain, and the two of them assisted one another as independent designers after leaving Neutra in the mid-1930s. Adopting Neutra's modernist sensibility, Harris merged the vernacular of California with a sensitivity to site and materials characteristic of the American Arts & Crafts Movement.
