Harry Carter (typographer)
Harry Graham Carter (27 March 1901 – 10 March 1982) was an English typographer, translator and writer. He was a well-known historian of type. He was the father of type designer Matthew Carter. Biography Carter studied at the progressive Bedales School (where he was a friend of John Rothenstein), and at The Queen's College, Oxford "where he became competent in French, German, Spanish, and Russian". (He would later learn Arabic, and design a Hebrew font.) Though he was studying law, Carter became interested in typography and bought a printing press. His first work with type came in 1928 and 1929 as an apprentice at the Monotype Corporation. At this time he formed friendships with Jan van Krimpen, Stanley Morison, Francis Meynell, and Oliver and Herbert Simon (cousins of his school-friend, John Rothenstein). Harry Charles Carter (5 May 1874 – 25 July 1952) was an Australian politician. He was born at Attleborough, Norfolk, England, to farming bailiff Edward Carter and Dinah Louisa, ''née'' Woor. He was educated locally and emigrated to Sydney Sydney ( ) is the capital city of the state of New South Wales, and the most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Harry Carter (smuggler)
The Carters of Prussia Cove were a family of Cornish smugglers active in the late 18th century operating out of Prussia Cove, Cornwall, where they had a hideout/home in a remote cliff next to the ocean. Much of what is known about the Carters came from Harry Carter's autobiography, ''The Autobiography of a Cornish Smuggler'', and folklore passed down through the generations. Family history Several Carter families are known in Cornwall from at least the middle of the 16th century. The Carter family later associated with Prussia Cove had roots in Breage and Germoe. Francis Carter married Annice (also recorded as Agnes) Williams in 1736, and the couple were recorded as having ten children: *Thomas Carter (1737-1818), married Alice Carter of Breage in December 1766 and had nine children. Harry Carter Stuart (July 4, 1893 – September 20, 1963) (born Henry Carter Stuart) was a Virginia cattle breeder and trader, who also served as the Democratic State Senator from the 18th District. A lifelong Democrat, Carter helped lead the Byrd Organization's policy of Massive Resistance to racial integration in Virginia's public schools. Early life and education Harry C. Stuart was born in Abington to Dale Carter Stuart (1858-1934) and his wife Sally Preston White Stuart (1871-1931). His uncle Henry Carter Stuart (who served as Governor of Virginia during World War I) operated the Stuart Land and Cattle Company along with Harry's father and his uncle Zed (Alexander).
