Harry Burns (activist)
Harry Victory Burns (November 11, 1922 – 2000) was an American civil rights leader from San Antonio, Texas. He was named by his mother for the pre-Veterans Day, which was Victory Day. During the 1940s and 1950s, Burns was the president of the San Antonio NAACP Branch. During the Civil Rights Movement, he worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall. He went on to organize marches throughout the city along with others such as Rev. Claude Black, Charles Hudspeth, G J Sutton, Ethel Minor Ethel Minor (November 26, 1922 - June 25, 2012) was a political figure and civil rights activist. Harry Burns (doctor)
Sir Henry Burns (born 1951), known generally as Harry Burns, is the professor of global public health, University of Strathclyde, having been the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland from September 2005 to April 2014. He has become known for his work to address health inequalities. He is a member of the Council of Economic Advisers in Scotland. Early life Henry Burns was born in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire in 1951 and was educated at St. Aloysius College, a private school in Glasgow. In 1974 he graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow. Career Burns initially pursued a career in general surgery, and for five years he was a consultant surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He took up a managerial role as the medical director of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He completed a master's degree in Public Health in 1990. Harry Burns (July 20, 1882 – January 9, 1939) was a vaudeville performer, boxing referee, actor, assistant director, animal-picture director and producer, and Hollywood magazine publisher. Burns was married to the actress Dorothy Vernon; the silent-film slapstick comedy star Bobby Vernon was his stepson. Biography Burns was born Jacob Elman in Warsaw, Poland. He started in vaudeville in New York before 1900 when he captured the attention of audiences as "the world's champion bag puncher." He did nine years of vaudeville, traveling from California to Maine and back again. He was then employed at the Pacific Athletic Club as press agent and secretary to Thomas J. Carey of the Vernon Arena but when 20-round boxing matches were banned in California, he went into the film industry. At the time of his death in 1939, Burns's life story was said to "encompass all the old Hollywoodiana that is gone forever. When Harry Met Sally
''When Harry Met Sally...'' is a 1989 American romantic comedy-drama film written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner. It stars Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally. The story follows the title characters from the time they meet in Chicago just before sharing a cross-country drive, through twelve years of chance encounters in New York City. The film addresses but doesn't resolve questions along the lines of "Can men and women ever just be friends?" Ideas for the film began when Rob Reiner divorced from Penny Marshall. An interview Ephron conducted with Reiner provided the basis for Harry. Sally was based on Ephron and some of her friends. Crystal came on board and made his own contributions to the screenplay, making Harry funnier. Ephron supplied the structure of the film with much of the dialogue based on the real-life friendship between Reiner and Crystal. Harry Burns Hutchins (April 8, 1847 – January 25, 1930) was the fourth president of the University of Michigan (1909–1920). Biography On April 8, 1847, Harry B. Hutchins was born in Lisbon, New Hampshire. Hutchins got his education at New Hampshire Conference Seminary, now known as Tilton School, as well as the Vermont Conference Seminary. Hutchins, at the age of nineteen, entered Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Hutchins, unfortunately, was not able to complete his first year however due to falling ill. Subsequently, Hutchins graduated from the University of Michigan in 1871. While at the University of Michigan, he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
