Harry Arizona Drachman
Harry Arizona Drachman was an Arizona pioneer, businessman and politician. He was born on February 3, 1869, in Tucson, Arizona, the first white Anglo-American male child born in Tucson. Drachman was a 33rd degree mason, and served as a deputy on the Supreme Council of Arizona. He joined the Masons in 1900, and held numerous high positions at the local, state, and national levels. He was also very active in the Knights of Pythias, having also joined that organization in 1900. He eventually rose to hold the position of the Supreme Representative in the organization's Supreme Lodge. Career He was the Tucson city treasurer from 1894 to 1898, and the Pima County treasurer between 1898 and 1902. Pima County
Pima County ( ) is a county in the south central region of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,043,433, making it Arizona's second-most populous county. The county seat is Tucson, where most of the population is centered. The county is named after the Pima Native Americans who are indigenous to this area. Pima County includes the entirety of the Tucson Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is the third largest metropolitan area in the Southwestern United States. Mose Drachman
Mose Drachman was a pioneer business and civic leader, as well as politician, in Tucson, Arizona, during the early 1900s. He was involved in numerous interests, including mercantile, real estate, banking, mining, and cattle. He served as the Senior Clerk for the U.S. District Court in Arizona during the term of William H. Sawtelle, served two terms on the Tucson City Council, and five consecutive terms on the Tucson Board of Education, as well as being on both the Tucson and Phoenix chambers of commerce. He also served a single term in the Arizona state senate during the 2nd Arizona State Legislature. Two books were written about his life, '' Ridin' the Rainbow'', and '' Chicken Every Sunday'', the latter being made into a Broadway play, as well as a motion picture of the same name. ''The Arizona Republic'' is an American daily newspaper published in Phoenix. Circulated throughout Arizona, it is the state's largest newspaper. Since 2000, it has been owned by the Gannett newspaper chain. Copies are sold at $2 daily or at $3 on Sundays and $5 on Thanksgiving Day; prices are higher outside Arizona. History Early years The newspaper was founded May 19, 1890, under the name ''The Arizona Republican''. Dwight B. Arizona Pioneers Historical Society
The Arizona Historical Society (AHS) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect people through the power of Arizona's history. It does this through four regional divisions. Each division has a representative museum. The statewide divisions are as follows: Southern Arizona Division in Tucson, the Central Arizona Division in Tempe, the Northern Arizona Division in Flagstaff, and the Rio Colorado Division in Yuma. It was founded in 1884. History of the Historical Society The group was founded as the Society of Arizona Pioneers on January 31, 1884 by physician John C. Handy, his father-in-law William Fisher Scott, and 58 other Tucson pioneers. With a new railroad being built and change on its way to Tucson, Arizona, pioneers worried that their stories of battles with the desert heat and the Apaches would be lost forever. Louis Zeckendorf
Louis Zeckendorf (April 6, 1838March 11, 1937) was a Jewish German-born American merchant. He was primarily involved in the mining industry in New Mexico and Arizona, as well as shipping and supplies in support of that industry. Biography Zeckendorf was born in the Kingdom of Hanover on April 6, 1838. After growing up in Hanover, in 1854 he immigrated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to join his brother Aaron, with his younger brother William joining them a year later. Louis and Aaron became members of the historical society, with Aaron being a charter member. They founded their first store with financial support from the Spiegelbergs, their former employers. Under the banner of A. & L. Zeckendorf, Wholesale and Retail, Aaron opened a Santa Fe branch, and Louis opened one in Albuquerque (an additional branch was opened in Deming, and stores near mining camps along the Rio Mimbres). 2nd Arizona State Legislature
The 2nd Arizona State Legislature, consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives, was constituted from January 1, 1915, to December 31, 1916, during the second term of George W. P. Hunt as Governor of Arizona, in Phoenix. The number of senators and representatives remained constant, at 19 and 35 respectively. Elias Hedrick
Elias Hedrick (1862-1949) was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 5th Arizona State Legislature, holding the seat from Pima County. Prior to his senate term, Hedrick served a single term in the Arizona House of Representatives during the 4th Arizona State Legislature. He was known as a philanthropist, particularly to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona. Outside of politics he was a highly successful real-estate man. Biography Hedricks was born in Alfordsville, Indiana, in 1862, although he always considered Washington, Indiana, his home town. In the 1890s, Hedrick worked as the superintendent of the Live Poultry Transportation Company in Chicago, Illinois. The Hedricks moved to Tucson in 1900 from Chicago, due to health of Ada Hedrick.
