Harriton House
Harriton House, originally known as Bryn Mawr, is an historic house which is located on the Philadelphia Main Line, and was most famously the residence of Founding Father Charles Thomson, the secretary of the Continental Congress. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. History and architectural features Originally built in 1704 by Rowland Ellis, a Welsh Quaker, it was called Bryn Mawr, meaning high hill. The modern town of Bryn Mawr is named after the house, and the National Register of Historic Places has it listed under the original name. It was originally designed as a T-shaped, two-story fieldstone dwelling with a gable roof. The original front section is approximately thirty-seven feet wide and twenty-two feet deep and the rear extension is approximately eighteen feet wide and twenty-three feet deep. A one-story brick kitchen was added to the end of the rear extension. The house was renovated in 1911 and major additions were made in 1926. ''Note: ... Harriton High School
Harriton High School is a public secondary school serving portions of Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania. The school is located on the Philadelphia Main Line. Harriton is one of two high schools in the Lower Merion School District; the other is Lower Merion High School. History In 1957, a new "campus-style" school was designed by architect Vincent Kling. It was situated on a portion of the plantation grounds belonging to Charles Thomson, son-in-law of Richard and Hannah Harrison, giving Harriton High School its name. Harriton High School opened in 1958. As of the 2009 school year, a new three-story building has been completed and the "campus-style" school largely demolished to make room for sports fields. Background Facts The appellant, Alexia Harriton, was a 25-year-old woman with severe congenital disabilities that had been caused by her mother's infection with the rubella virus while pregnant with her. These disabilities left Harriton unable to care for herself. The defendant, Paul Richard Stephens, was the doctor of Harriton's mother while she was pregnant. After conducting and reviewing pathological tests, Dr Stephens advised the mother that she did not have the rubella virus. Abraham Harriton
Abraham Harriton was a Romanian-born American modernist artist and social realism painter in the United States. Early life and education Born in 1893 in Bucharest, then the Kingdom of Romania, Harriton studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City from 1908 until 1915. There, he studied under artists such as Kenyon Cox, Emil Carlsen and George DeForest Brush. Career Harriton later become a teacher at the National Academy of Design, and, like many other artists during the Great Depression, received commissions from the Works Progress Administration during the 1930s. His 1939 mural for the Augusta, Georgia post office ''Plantation, Transportation, Education'', commissioned by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, is on display at the Augusta Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
