Harrison E. Gawtry
Harrison Edward Gawtry (November 28, 1840 – January 28, 1919) was an American businessman who was one of the organizers of the Consolidated Gas Company of New York, and served as president for more than ten years until his retirement in December 1904 Early life Gawtry was born on November 28, 1840, in New York City. He was a son of Woolen merchant William M. Gawtry (1808–1893), who emigrated from England to New York in 1821, and his first wife, Harriet Hedden. After the death of his mother, his father married Anne Eliza Walker in 1857. His paternal grandfather, John Gawtry, was born at Elvington, North Yorkshire, Elvington, near York, in 1773 and died in Geneva, New York, in 1847. During the U.S. Civil War, Gawtry served with Company K of the 7th Regiment New York State Militia, 7th Regiment, New York. Boudinot Currie Atterbury (June 10, 1852 – May 21, 1930), from a wealthy New York family, trained to be a medical doctor and worked with the Presbyterian missions in China and later with Chinese communities in the United States. Olivia Egleston Phelps (March 30, 1784 – April 24, 1859) was an American philanthropist who was the wife of businessman Anson Green Phelps, co-founder of the Phelps Dodge Company. The Astor Trust Company was a historic American banking organization. The firm merged with Bankers Trust in 1917. History The Astor National Bank of New York was authorized to begin business on February 9, 1898, with initial capital of $300,000. John Jacob Astor IV was the first depositor when the bank opened on February 14, 1898, with George Fisher Baker as president and Charles F. Bevins as cashier. The first days deposits totaled $700,000. The Bank was located in the Astor Court Building, adjoining the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, at 34th Street and Astor Court (just west of Fifth Avenue). Peekskill Lighting & Railroad Company
The Peekskill Lighting and Railroad Company was a streetcar transit line operating in northern Westchester County and southern Putnam County, New York. The earliest segment was constructed by the Peekskill Traction Company in 1899, running from the New York Central Railroad train station at Peekskill to Lake Mohegan. The company was unable to meet payments for construction of the line, so the contractor operated the railroad until it was sold to the Peekskill Lighting and Railroad Company in 1900 (itself a consolidation of the Peekskill Gas Light Co., Peekskill Electric Light and Power Co., and the Peekskill Traction Co.). The associated Westchester and Putnam Traction Company built extensions beyond Lake Mohegan, though the two companies were operated as one.
