Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area
Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area, also known as the Harriet Hollister Spencer Memorial Recreation Area, is a recreation area and part of the New York state park system. It is located south of Honeoye, off Canadice Hill Road in the south part of the Town of Canadice in Ontario County, New York. History Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area was created after of land was given to the state from the estate of Harriet Hollister Spencer, a Rochester horticulturalist, rose expert and civic leader, after her death in 1962. The recreation area nearly doubled in size after several adjacent parcels were purchased by New York State from The Nature Conservancy starting in the late 2000s. Canadice, New York
Canadice is a town in Ontario County, New York, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2020 census. The Town of Canadice is in the Finger Lakes region of New York and is in the southwestern part of its county. History When the county was formed, Canadice was within a district named, in turn "Pittstown," "Honeoye," and "Richmond." Settlement began ''circa'' 1795 near the shore of Honeoye Lake. The town was first established in 1829 from the Town of Richmond, but was not fully organized until the next year. A part of Canadice was taken back by Richmond in 1836. Honeoye ( ) is a hamlet in the Town of Richmond, in Ontario County, New York, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census, which lists the community as a census-designated place (CDP). It is located 33 miles (53 kilometers) south of downtown Rochester. The community is at the north end of Honeoye Lake, one of the minor Finger Lakes. It is primarily situated along U.S. Route 20A between Ontario County Roads 33 and 37. The center of the hamlet can roughly be placed at the intersection of Route 20A and Ontario County Road 36 (West Lake Road). Honeoye Lake
Honeoye Lake ( ) is one of the Finger Lakes located in Ontario County, New York. Most of the lake is within the town of Richmond but a smaller southwestern part is in the town of Canadice. The hamlet of Honeoye is just north of the lake. The name Honeoye comes from the Seneca word ''ha-ne-a-yah'', which means ''lying finger'', or ''where the finger lies''. The name comes from the local story of a Native American whose finger was bitten by a rattlesnake and who therefore cut off his finger with a tomahawk.
