Harpersfield Covered Bridge
Harpersfield Bridge is a covered bridge spanning the Grand River in Harpersfield Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. This double-span Howe truss bridge, one of currently 17 drivable covered bridges in the county, is the third longest covered bridge in Ohio at 228 feet. A flood in 1913 washed away the land at the north end of the bridge, and the steel span was subsequently attached. The bridge features a walkway, added during its renovation in 1991–1992. The bridge also features an Ashtabula County MetroPark at its north end, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Harpersfield Township is one of the twenty-seven townships of Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. The 2010 census found 2,695 people in the township. State Route 534 (SR 534) is a north–south state highway in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The southern terminus of SR 534 is at its junction with the duplex of U.S. Route 62 (US 62) and SR 173 nearly west of Salem. Its northern terminus is a curve in Geneva-on-the-Lake where the highway directly transitions into SR 531 at that route's western terminus. Route description SR 534's path takes it through the western portions of Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties. Howe Truss
A Howe truss is a truss bridge consisting of chords, verticals, and diagonals whose vertical members are in tension and whose diagonal members are in compression. The Howe truss was invented by William Howe in 1840, and was widely used as a bridge in the mid to late 1800s. Development The earliest bridges in North America were made of wood, which was abundant and cheaper than stone or masonry. Early wooden bridges were usually of the Towne lattice truss or Burr truss design. Some later bridges were McCallum trusses (a modification of the Burr truss). About 1840, iron rods were added to wooden bridges. The Pratt truss used wooden vertical members in compression with diagonal iron braces.
