Air-Vice Marshal Harold Hawkins, CBE, Air Force Cross (United Kingdom), AFC, ICD, GLM was an Australians, Australian air force officer who served as Commander of the Rhodesian Air Force from 1965 to 1968. Early life Harold Hawkins was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia in 1922. He died in South Africa on 13 March 1988. Career Before the outbreak of the Second World War, Hawkins joined the Royal Australian Air Force. He saw service in North Africa, Italy, and the Philippines. During his service, he was posted to the Rhodesian Air Training Group's Central Flying School, Norton, Zimbabwe, Norton in 1943. A year later, in June 1944, he returned to Rhodesia to marry Evelyn Walker. After serving in the Rhodesian Air Force, Hawkins was appointed as Diplomatic Representative in South Africa. References

The Air Force Cross (AFC) is a military decoration awarded to officers, and since 1993 other ranks, of the British Armed Forces, and formerly also to officers of the other Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries. It is granted for "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry while flying, though not in active operations against the enemy". A Medal bar, bar is added to the ribbon for holders who are awarded a further AFC. History The award was established on 3 June 1918, shortly after the formation of the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was originally awarded to RAF commissioned officers and Warrant Officers, but was later expanded to include Royal Navy and army aviation officers. While consistently awarded for service while "flying though not in active operations against the enemy", the AFC was originally awarded for "valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying" with many awards made for meritorious service over a period of time, rather than a specific act of bravery.
