The Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division, First Judicial Department, or simply the First Department, is one of the four geographical components of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, the intermediate appellate court of the State of New York. Its courthouse is located in Manhattan, New York City. Jurisdiction The First Department of the Appellate Division holds jurisdiction over the Counties of New York and the Bronx. Appeals are taken to the Appellate Division, as a matter of right, in civil and criminal cases, from the Supreme Court, Surrogate's Court, Family Court, and Court of Claims. Along with the state's other three Appellate Departments, it shares responsibility for all admissions to the New York bar. Rose Hill is a neighborhood in the New York City borough (New York City), borough of Manhattan, between the neighborhoods of Murray Hill, Manhattan, Murray Hill to the north and Gramercy Park to the south, Kips Bay to the east, the Flatiron District to the southwest, and NoMad, Manhattan, NoMad to the northwest. The formerly unnamed area is sometimes considered to be a part of NoMad, because the name "Rose Hill" was chiefly used for the area in the 18th and 19th centuries, and is not very commonly used to refer to the area in the 2010s. Dianne Renwick is an associate justice of the New York Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Judicial Department. Early life and education She is a 1982 graduate of Cornell University and a 1986 graduate of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Legal career Prior to joining the bench, she worked as a staff attorney in various divisions of the Legal Aid Society. She subsequently served on the New York City Civil Court from 1997 to 2001 and was a New York Supreme Court Justice from 2001 to 2008. George Landon Ingraham
George Landon Ingraham (August 1, 1847 – January 24, 1931) was a lawyer and judge in New York City. Biography Ingraham was born in New York City in 1847 to Mary Landon Ingraham and Daniel P. Ingraham, the presiding justice for the First District of the New York State Supreme Court. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1869, was admitted to the New York City Bar Association the same year, and began a lucrative law practice. In 1882 he was elected to a judgeship on the Superior Court of New York City. In 1891 he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court by New York Governor David B. Hill. He became one of the first associate justices of the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department of the Supreme Court of New York State upon formation of its appellate divisions in 1896. William Rumsey (born October 18, 1841, in Bath, New York, died January 16, 1903, in Rochester, New York) was an American lawyer, diplomat and judge. His father was David Rumsey, a prominent lawyer, politician and judge. He attended Williams College from 1858 to 1861, departing for military service in his senior year. Due to his military service, the college eventually awarded him a diploma. A member of the New York State Militia, he was pressed into service immediately upon the outbreak of the Civil War.
