Harold A. Winston
Harold A. Winston (August 28, 1901 – July 16, 1964) was an American stage actor and promoter, best known for his work as a dialog director at Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros. Early life Winston was born Harry Weinstein on August 28, 1901 to Jacob and Fanny Weinstein in Manhattan, NY. His Jewish parents and their two teenage sons had left Russia to escape the pogroms of the Czar. Two older siblings, Adolph and Sadie, were also born in New York. At age 19 he was listed as working as an editor in the publishing industry in New York City. Acting career Winston is variously described as an actor in New York, a promoter and a person who stages plays; a dialog director, a coach, and a scout in Hollywood. Howard W. ''The Lark'' () is a 1952 play about Joan of Arc by the French playwright Jean Anouilh. It was presented on Broadway in English in 1955, starring Julie Harris as Joan and Boris Karloff as Pierre Cauchon. It was produced by Kermit Bloomgarden. Lillian Hellman made the English adaptation and Leonard Bernstein composed the incidental music. The two stars of the play reprised their roles in a 1957 television production of the play, as part of the anthology series '' Hallmark Hall of Fame''. A different television adaptation aired in 1958 in Australia. There is another English translation by Christopher Fry. Equity, formerly officially titled the British Actors' Equity Association, is the trade union for the performing arts and entertainment industries. ''The Desert Song'' is a 1943 American musical film. It was directed by Robert Florey and starred Dennis Morgan, Irene Manning and Bruce Cabot. It is based on the 1926 operetta with music by Sigmund Romberg. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction ( Charles Novi, Jack McConaghy). This film version of the operetta was, like the 1929 film version, almost never seen after its original release due to content and copyright issues, which made the film hard to find or view. In 2014, it was remastered, restored and released on DVD by Warner Brothers. The film is more sophisticated technically than the earlier film due to its large budget and advances in both sound and color. This is the first film version to be made in full three-strip Technicolor.
