Leonard Roy Harmon
Leonard Roy Harmon (January 21, 1917 – November 13, 1942) was an American sailor who died in action during World War II and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his valor. He is the first African-American man to have a US warship, the , named after him. Life Harmon was born in Cuero, Texas, on January 21, 1917. He attended the segregated all-black Daule High School before working in livestock production. During the Great Depression, he performed various house and grounds chores for the owner of the historic William Frobese home in Cuero. He was 22 years of age when he enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1939 at a San Antonio recruiting station. He reported for training in Norfolk, Virginia, before reporting for duty on the cruiser on October 28, 1939. Leon D. Harmon (1922 - 1983) was a researcher in mental/neural processing, particularly regarding vision, who worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Incorporated. Harmon started his career as a radio serviceman and electronics hobbyist. In 1950, he went to work as a wireman on the IAS machine at the Institute for Advanced Study, where he worked for Julian Bigelow and encountered John von Neumann and Albert Einstein. At the same time he began taking night courses in engineering at New York University. When the IAS project ended in 1956, he joined Bell Laboratories where he worked on human perception, computer vision and graphics. In 1966, Harmon and Kenneth C. Knowlton were experimenting with photomosaic, creating large prints from collections of small symbols or images. Henry S. Harmon (c. 1839 – December 24, 1889) was an attorney and politician in Florida after the Civil War. He was the first African-American to be admitted to the bar in Florida. Early life Henry Harmon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1839. His parents, Timothy and Robinet Harmon, had been slaves in Virginia, but had escaped to the North before Henry was born. Although details of his young years are scarce, Henry was later described as "a anof education." Harmon enlisted in the 3rd United States Colored Infantry Regiment when it was formed in August 1863, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant before the end of the year. David Glen Harmon (January 2, 1921 – March 9, 2007) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who played for the Montreal Canadiens from 1942 to 1951. He was born in Holland, Manitoba and died in Mississauga, Ontario. Playing career Harmon's professional hockey career officially began on June 27, 1941 when he was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens from the Tulsa Oilers (AHA) through an inter-league draft; he would play for Montreal for the following 9 years, until his retirement from the NHL. Harmon's first season as a Canadien, 1941–1942, was spent playing with the Montreal Senior Canadiens of the QSHL.
