Harm Buiter
Harm Geert Buiter (8 January 1922 – 22 February 2011) was a Dutch trade unionist and politician. Born in Tubbergen in the Netherlands, Buiter studied economics in Amsterdam, but was expelled for anti-Nazi activity during World War II. After the war, he completed his studies in England, then in 1947 returned to the Netherlands to work for the General Dutch Metalworkers' Union. In 1956, he was appointed as secretary of the European Coal and Steel Community's trade union committee, then in 1958 became secretary of its successor, the European Trades Union Secretariat. In 1967, Buiter was elected as general secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, but he retired five years later due to poor health. He was elected as the Mayor of Groningen, serving until 1985. Willem Hendrik Buiter CBE (born 26 September 1949) is an American-British economist. He spent most of his career as an academic, teaching at various universities. More recently, he was Chief Economist at Citigroup. Early life and education Buiter was born in The Hague, Netherlands on 26 September 1949. He is a national of the United States and the United Kingdom. Willem's father, Harm Buiter, was a Dutch economist, international trades union official and politician of the Labour Party (PvdA), who had served as Mayor of Groningen. Buiter went to the European School in Brussels, Belgium from 1962 to 1967, where he obtained his European Baccalaureate. Otto Kersten (trade Unionist)
Otto Kersten (1928 – 1982) was a German trade union official. Born in Altjessnitz, Kersten joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and a trade union in 1946. He then studied economics at the University of Rostock and in East Berlin. The SPD in East Germany was merged into the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, but Kersten remained part of a social democratic opposition group in the party. In 1953, he was sentenced to fifteen years hard labour for this activity, although he was released after three years. He then moved to Frankfurt in West Germany, and found work with the Bundesbank. Kersten retained his interest in trade unionism, and in 1960 he began working for the European Trade Union Secretariat, then in 1965 moved to the German Trade Union Confederation, where he reorganised the international department. Omer Becu
Omer Liévin Benjamin Becu (21 August 1902 – 9 October 1982) was a Belgian trade unionist, who became General Secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. Born in Ostend, Becu trained as a radio operator and joined the merchant navy. He soon became involved in trade unionism, and in 1929 became the full-time assistant general secretary of the International Mercantile Marine Officers' Association. In 1932, he was elected as the union's general secretary, simultaneously becoming general secretary of the Belgian Union of Merchant Marine Officers. In this role, he gave support to the republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Threatened by World War II, Becu escaped to the UK in 1940, continuing in his trade union posts. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) took an interest in his activities, and in 1941 invited him to New York, where he set up a special section of the federation for workers in countries which had been occupied by the Nazis. ...
