Hardy (surname)
Hardy is a surname of French-Norman, English, Scottish and Irish origin. It appears that the oldest usage is from the Old French ''hardi'' meaning “bold, courageous" which itself comes from Old Frankish ''hardjan'' meaning "to make hard". The final ''-y'' is also typical of the French proper names (first names, surnames and place names, with the notable exception '' Henri'', when it is a given name). Some of the oldest Hardy families in England seem to originate from a Norman Knight de Hardy in the mid 11th century. English Hardy families can mainly be found around Dorset and Yorkshire. In Scotland Hardi is considered to have Norman, Viking or Celtic orgins and is mainly a Lowland surname. Scottish Hardy's are mainly affiliated with Clan Mackintosh as a sept and the larger Clan Chattan Federation. Antonio Hardy (born September 10, 1968), better known by his stage name Big Daddy Kane, is an American rapper who began his career in 1986 as a member of the Juice Crew. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and skilled MCs in hip hop. Anthony John Hardy (31 May 1951 – 26 November 2020) was an English serial killer who was known as the Camden Ripper for dismembering some of his victims. In November 2003, he was sentenced to three life terms for three murders, but police believe he may have been responsible for up to five more. He earned an engineer's degree from Imperial College London and subsequently became the manager of a large company. Alister Hardy
Sir Alister Clavering Hardy (10 February 1896 – 22 May 1985) was an English marine biologist, an expert on marine ecosystems spanning organisms from zooplankton to whales. He had the artistic skill to illustrate his books with his own drawings, maps, diagrams, and paintings. Hardy served as zoologist on the RRS ''Discovery''s voyage to explore the Antarctic between 1925 and 1927. On the voyage he invented the Continuous Plankton Recorder; it enabled any ship to collect plankton samples during an ordinary voyage. Alfred Gathorne-Hardy
Alfred Erskine Gathorne-Hardy (27 February 1845 – 11 November 1918), styled The Honourable from 1878, was a British Conservative Member of Parliament. Gathorne-Hardy was the third son of Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook, and Jane Orr. Born Alfred Hardy, he assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Gathorne in 1878 like the rest of his family. Alfred Douglas Hardy
Alfred Douglas Hardy (1870 – 1958) was an Australian amateur collector of freshwater algae specimens. He worked as a draftsman and botanical officer for the Victorian Forest Commission until his retirement in 1936. He was also an amateur naturalist, initially with wide interests but later specialising in freshwater algae. He sent many specimens to George Stephen West, some of which were described as new species by West. In 1909, West published a major paper on the freshwater algae of Yan Yean Reservoir, based entirely upon specimens collected by Hardy. One of the new species published therein was named ''Debarya hardyi'' in Hardy's honour. Also in 1909, the Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works appointed him "honorary algologist", a position that he held for the rest of his life. Alfred Hardy (architect)
Alfred Hardy (1900–1965) was a Belgian contractor and autodidact architect. He became internationally known for his thin-shell concrete constructions in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Quiévrain, he came into contact during World War II with the Ghent Professor Gustave Magnel and Brussels contractor Emile Blaton. Together with Polish engineer Simon Chaikes, he designed in 1947 two cylindrical aircraft hangars for the Grimbergen Airfield. This design was included in the Twentieth Century Engineering retrospective of 1964 in the New York Museum of Modern Art. His pioneering constructions contributed in architecture to the development of thin shells made out of reinforced concrete, later used by architects like Eero Saarinen or Félix Candela. The hangars are protected since 2007. He designed his own house in 1954 in Buizingen, Belgium. Alfred Louis Philippe Hardy (30 November 1811, Paris – 23 January 1893, Paris) was a French dermatologist. In 1836 he received his medical doctorate in Paris, where in 1839 he became ''chef de clinique'' under Pierre Fouquier at the Hôpital de la Charité. In 1847 he obtained his agrégation at the faculty of medicine in Paris, and four years later, succeeded Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol as ''chef de service'' at the Hôpital Saint-Louis.
