Cootamundra, New South Wales
Cootamundra, nicknamed Coota, is a town in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia and within the Riverina. It is within the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council. At the 2016 Census, Cootamundra had a population of 6,782. It is located on the Olympic Highway at the point where it crosses the Muttama Creek, between Junee and Cowra. Its railway station is on the Main Southern line, part of the Melbourne-to-Sydney line. Cootamundra is the birthplace of Sir Donald Bradman , an Australian cricketer universally regarded as the greatest batsman of all time. Coolac is a village in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia in Gundagai Council. At the , Coolac had a population of 216. History The place name ''Coolac'' is derived from the local Aboriginal name for a plant which was abundant in the area and also from the Aboriginal word meaning "native bear". Coolac Post Office opened on 1 June 1870. The 11 kilometre section of the Hume Highway at Coolac was the last two-lane section of highway between Sydney and the Sturt Highway interchange. Since 1986, plans had been drawn-up for the Coolac bypass, with a review of environmental factors report completed in 1997 but construction did not commence until May 2007 with the project opening in August 2009 - Under AusLink. Bowning is a small town in the Southern Tablelands, west of Yass, New South Wales, Yass on the Hume Highway in Yass Valley Council, Yass Valley Shire. Bowning is an Australian Aboriginal languages, aboriginal word meaning 'big hill'. At the , Bowning and the surrounding area had a population of 573. Nearby Bowning Hill is and Hume and Hovell expedition, Hume and Hovell mentioned it in their 1824 journal. Bowning was one of the earliest settlements in the district. Bookham is a small village in the Southern Tablelands and Riverina regions of New South Wales, Australia in Yass Valley Shire. It is about 29 km west of Yass on the Hume Highway. Overview The general grazing area which now encompasses the village of Bookham was originally collectively called ''Bogolong'' and childhood memories of the races at ''Bogalong Racetrack'' inspired Banjo Paterson to write his poem ''Old Pardon the Son of Reprieve''. The name change came about in 1839 when Lady Jane Franklin, wife of John Franklin, the Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land between 1837 and 1843, became the first European woman to travel overland from Port Phillip to Sydney and stayed in the area in 1839. Shortly after a design for the village at ''Cumbookambookinah'' near Bogolong was drawn up and that name was shortened either through general usage or by design to the current name of Bookham.
