''Hard Times are in Fashion'' is the third studio album by the American indie rock band Koufax. Background When Koufax began recording their third album, this happened without a valid record deal. As a result, the band had to pre-finance the recording costs from their own pockets. They worked in six different studios. The band was also currently undergoing a line-up change. From the now disbanding but friendly band The Get Up Kids, the brothers Rob and Ryan Pope joined the band for the drums and bass section. No Koufax album features as many guest musicians as this one. For example, the album was recorded with three different drummers. Guitar and piano work was also added from outside. For the first time on a Koufax album a pedal steel guitar can be heard. Finally, the finished album was handed over to Doghouse (distribution in the USA) and to Motormusic (distribution in Europe). Koufax (band)
Koufax was an American indie rock band from Toledo, Ohio. The band's style of music was mainly characterized by piano-driven rock songs with guitar accompaniment. Quite frequently the band also included synthesizers. Later, the use of wind instruments increased. History Koufax were founded in 1998 (some sources also state that the band was founded in 1999). The band is named after the baseball legend Sandy Koufax. Koufax were founded by Robert Suchan (guitar / vocals), Sean Grogan (keyboard), Andrew Cameron (bass) and Dave Shettler (drums). The founding members are mainly from Toledo, Ohio. The band's self-titled debut EP was released in 1999 on independent label Doghouse Records, and got them noticed by The Get Up Kids, who signed them to their label, Vagrant Records subsidiary Heroes and Villains. ''Why Bother At All'' is the second EP by American indie rock band Koufax. It was released in 2005 on Motor Music. The song ''Why Bother at All'' was recorded for the album ''Hard Times Are In Fashion''. It was also released as a CD-Single and as a 7" red translucent vinyl promo-single The first three songs were recorded in August 2004 at the Black Lodge Eudora-Studios in Kansas. Michael Krassner
Michael Krassner (born 1971) is an American musician and composer, known for his work in the Boxhead Ensemble and The Lofty Pillars. He has collaborated with numerous musical artists, including Califone, Dirty Three, Gastr del Sol, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Will Oldham, Scott Tuma and Ken Vandermark. Biography Michael Krassner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Arizona when he was a teenager. He began writing music at the age of fourteen after hearing The Velvet Underground. Pedal Steel Guitar
The pedal steel guitar is a Console steel guitar, console-type of steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissando, glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrato, vibrati—characteristics it shares with the human voice. Pedal steel is most commonly associated with American country music and Music of Hawaii, Hawaiian music. Pedals were added to a lap steel guitar in 1940, allowing the performer to play a major scale without moving the Steel bar, bar and also to push the pedals while striking a chord, making passing notes slur or bend up into harmony with existing notes. Ben Folds Five is an American alternative rock trio formed in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Ryan Pope
Ryan Pope is an American musician who lives in Lawrence, Kansas. History Ryan Pope grew up in Olathe, Kansas. In the summer of 1994, he was in a band called "Kingpin" with his brother Rob and future The Get Up Kids bandmate Jim Suptic. After the band broke up due to internal conflicts, Rob and Jim re-formed with Matt Pryor, who had been playing with Secular Theme and friend Nathan Shay on drums to form The Get Up Kids. After Shay quit the band due to a reluctance to tour, the band asked Ryan to become their new drummer. In 1997 the band recorded its first release, Four Minute Mile. Ryan also played drums with Safety in Numbers. He has also toured with Reggie and the Full Effect and The New Amsterdams.
