Harborne (ward)
Harborne ward is a local government district, one of 40 wards that make up Birmingham City Council. Harborne lies to the south west of Birmingham city centre. It has a slightly older age profile than the city average. The percentage of ethnic minority residents is below the city average. Unemployment is below the city average. The ward population at the 2011 census was 23,001. Politics The Harborne ward is currently represented by two Labour and Co-operative Councillors; Jayne Francis (2016-) and Martin Brooks (2022-). Ward (electoral Subdivision)
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. 2006 Birmingham City Council Election
The 2006 Birmingham City Council election took place on 4 May 2006 to elect members of Birmingham City Council in West Midlands, England. One third of the council was up for election, with an extra vacancy in Kingstanding due to pending legal proceedings. 2008 Birmingham City Council Election
Elections to Birmingham City Council in England were held on 1 May 2008. One third of the council was up for election and the council stayed under no overall control as it had been since 2003. 230 candidates stood in the election for the 40 seats that were contested. Five parties contested every ward in Birmingham, the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, British National Party and the Greens. Overall turnout across the city was 31.2% The results saw the Conservative party gain significantly, winning 6 seats from the Labour party and Respect gain an independent seat. The Liberal Democrats were pleased to hold all their seats. As a result, the Conservative and Liberal Democrat ruling coalition increased their majority to hold 75% of the seats on the council. Mike Whitby
Michael John Whitby, Baron Whitby (born 6 February 1948) is an English Conservative Party politician and former leader of Birmingham City Council, a post he held from June 2004 to May 2012. Until 2014 he was one of three councillors representing the Harborne ward in the west of the city. He was formerly a Councillor on Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council. It was announced that he would be made a working peer by David Cameron on 1 August 2013. Whitby was educated in Smethwick at James Watt Technical Grammar School, and also at Michael's Hoven College in the then West Germany. He then undertook a period of voluntary work in Germany, helping to rebuild communities destroyed during World War II. He has worked in the cultural sector in Liverpool, and also lectured in Business and Management Studies.
