Harald Sverdrup (oceanographer)
Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (15 November 1888 – 21 August 1957) was a Norwegian oceanographer and meteorologist. He was director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and director of the Norwegian Polar Institute. Background He was born at Sogndal in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. He was the son of Lutheran theologian Edvard Sverdrup (1861–1923) and Maria Vollan (1865–1891). His sister Mimi Sverdrup Lunden (1894–1955) was an educator and author. His brother Leif Sverdrup (1898–1976) was a General with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His brother Einar Sverdrup (1895–1942) was CEO of Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani. Sverdrup was a student at Bergen Cathedral School in 1901 before graduating in 1906 at Kongsgård School in Stavanger. He graduated cand. real. in 1914 from University of Oslo. Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (engineer)
Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (16 or 17 December 1846 – 1 April 1916) was a Norwegian engineer. Personal life Sverdrup was born at the farm Rise in Sem as a son of Peter Jacob Sverdrup and Aaselle Thurmann. He was a grandson of former owner of Rise farm Jacob Liv Borch Sverdrup, grandnephew of professor Georg Sverdrup, nephew of politician Harald Ulrik Sverdrup and Prime Minister Johan Sverdrup, first cousin once removed of professors Jakob Sverdrup and Georg Sverdrup, and a first cousin of bishop Jakob Sverdrup, professor Edvard Sverdrup, bishop Jakob Sverdrup Smitt, politician Livius Smitt and agriculturalist Jonas Smitt. He was the father of naval officer and politician Trygve Sverdrup. Career Sverdrup got his first education at the agricultural school run at his family farm until 1861. Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (29 May 1923 – 26 June 1992) was a Norwegian poet and children's writer. He received several literary prizes, including the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature, the Mads Wiel Nygaards Endowment, the Dobloug Prize and the Riksmål Society Literature Prize. Early and personal life Sverdrup was born in Gravdal, Buksnes, Lofoten, as a son of medical doctor Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (1890–1976) and Berit Johanne Strandenæs (1896–1961). He was related to bishop and politician Jakob Sverdrup, who was his great-uncle, and to oceanographer Harald Ulrik Sverdrup Jr, who was his first cousin once removed. Other first cousins once removed are Leif Sverdrup, Georg Johan Sverdrup and philologist Jakob Sverdrup.
