Happy Birthday (Altered Images Album)
''Happy Birthday'' is the debut studio album by Scottish new wave band Altered Images, released in 1981. It was chiefly produced by Steven Severin and recorded at Rockfield Studios, with the exception of one track, " Happy Birthday", which was produced by Martin Rushent and recorded at Genetic Sound. "Happy Birthday" became the band's biggest hit, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart in October 1981. ''Happy Birthday'' reached number 26 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 60,000 copies. Release ''Happy Birthday'' was released on LP and cassette in 1981 by Epic Records in the United Kingdom and Portrait Records in the United States. The US edition of the album features an re-recording, produced by Martin Rushent, of the track "Insects", in place of the original Steven Severin-produced version included on the UK edition. Altered Images are a Scottish new wave/post-punk band who found success in the early 1980s. Fronted by singer Clare Grogan, the group branched into mainstream pop music, having six UK top-40 hit singles and three top-30 albums from 1981 to 1983. Their hits include " Happy Birthday", "I Could Be Happy", "See Those Eyes", and " Don't Talk to Me About Love". Johnny McElhone
John Francis McElhone (born 21 April 1963 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a Scottish guitarist and songwriter. He has played with three bands who have enjoyed a top-20 presence in the UK Singles Chart; the new wave bands Altered Images and Hipsway, and the alternative/pop rock band Texas. Altered Images and Texas have had top-20 UK Albums Chart hits. McElhone contributed the musical part of co-writing the bulk of Texas's material. Clare Grogan
Claire Patricia Grogan (born 17 March 1962), known professionally as Clare Grogan or sometimes as C. P. Grogan, is a Scottish actress and singer. She is best known as the lead singer of the 1980s new wave music group Altered Images, as well as for supporting roles in the 1981 film ''Gregory's Girl'' and the science fiction sitcom ''Red Dwarf'', as the first incarnation of Kristine Kochanski. Early life Born in Glasgow, Grogan and her two sisters all attended the Notre Dame Convent School. Aged 17, while dancing at the Glasgow College of Technology, a fight broke out nearby between several patrons. The flexi disc (also known as a phonosheet, Sonosheet or Soundsheet, a trademark) is a phonograph record made of a thin, flexible vinyl sheet with a molded-in spiral stylus groove, and is designed to be playable on a normal phonograph turntable. Flexible records were commercially introduced as the Eva-tone Soundsheet in 1962. They were very popular among children and teenagers and mass-produced by the state publisher in the Soviet government. Marc Bolan
Marc Bolan ( ; born Mark Feld; 30 September 1947 – 16 September 1977) was an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was a pioneer of the glam rock movement in the early 1970s with his band T. Rex. Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of T. Rex. In the late 1960s, he rose to fame as the founder and leader of the psychedelic folk band Tyrannosaurus Rex, with whom he released four critically acclaimed albums and had one minor hit "Debora". Bolan had started as an acoustic singer-writer before heading into electric music prior to the recording of T. "Jeepster" is a song by English glam rock act T. Rex. It was released on 5 November 1971 by record label Fly as a single from the group's sixth studio album (and second as T. Rex) ''Electric Warrior''. The B-side, "Life's a Gas", is taken from the same album. Several artists have recorded cover versions of it. Both of the single's tracks were written by Marc Bolan and produced by Tony Visconti. Release Originally, "Jeepster" and "Life's a Gas" were pressed up together on 7 inch vinyl as a limited edition promotional disc for ''Electric Warrior''. Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and (from March 2015) audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on UKChartsPlus as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. However, even though number 100 was classed as a hit album (as in the case of The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums) in the 1980s until January 1989, since the compilations were removed this definition was changed to Top 75 with follow-up books such as The Virgin Book of British Hit Albums book only including this data. The Official Charts (legal name: The Official UK Charts Company Limited) is a British inter-professional organization that compiles various "official" record charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. In the United Kingdom, its charts include ones for singles, albums and films, with the data compiled from a mixture of downloads, purchases (of physical media) and streaming.
