Hapoel Ashkelon F.C. ( he, מועדון כדורגל הפועל אשקלון, ''Moadon Kaduregel Hapoel Ashkelon'') is an Israeli football club based in Ashkelon. The club currently competes in Liga Alef and plays at the 5,250-capacity Sala Stadium. History After being founded in 1955, Hapoel Ashkelon spent their first few decades in the lower leagues of Israeli football. 1995–96 they won Liga Alef South division and promoted to Liga Artzit (then the second tier) and in 1996–97, they achieved second successive promotion, to Liga Leumit (then the top tier) as Liga Artzit champions. However, the club finished bottom of the division, with a points deduction. In 1999–2000, they were relegated to the third tier (which became Liga Artzit following the formation of the Israeli Premier League as the top tier in 1999), before returning to the second tier (now Liga Leumit), after winning Liga Artzit in the 2004–05 season. Hapoel ( he, הפועל, lit. ''the worker'') is an Israeli Jewish sports association established in 1926 by the Histadrut Labor Federation. History During the Mandate for Palestine, British Mandate of Palestine period Hapoel had a bitter rivalry with Maccabi World Union, Maccabi and organized its own competitions, with the exception of Israel Football Association, football, the only sport in which all the organizations played each other. At the time, Hapoel took no part in the ''Eretz Israel Olympic Committee'', which was controlled by Maccabi, and instead sought for international ties with similar workers sports organizations of socialist parties. Therefore, Hapoel became a member of Socialist Workers' Sport International, SASI in 1927 and later was a member of CSIT. 2009–10 Liga Leumit
The 2009–10 Liga Leumit was the 11th season since it became the second-tier in 1999 and the 68th season of second-tier football in Israel. It began on 21 August 2009 and ended on 15 May 2010. Changes from 2008–09 season Structure changes League size has been increased from twelve to sixteen teams for this season, teams will thus play a home-and-away round-robin schedule for a total of 30 matches. After the conclusion of this "regular season", teams will be split up into three playoff groups according to their league position. Points earned during the season will be halved and taken over to the respective playoff group. The best six teams will compete for the promotion spots. Clubs ranked 7th through 10th will engage in a placement round, while the bottom six teams will play out two relegation spots. Fernando Leandro Fligman ( he, פרננדו פליגמן; born 1 September 1983) is an Argentine-Israeli association football player who is currently with Atlético Concepción. Playing career In 2004, Fligman signed a three-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv for $70,000 a year. Due to late registration, Maccabi could not register him as an Israeli player, even though he had immigrated under the terms of the Law of Return and is Jewish. Jonathan "Jonny" Tennenbaum ( he, יונתן "ג'וני" טננבאום; born 1 September 1979) is an Argentine-Israeli professional association football player currently contracted to Hapoel F.C. Sandala Gilboa. Playing career Tennenbaum arrived in Israel as part of the Argentine football team for the Maccabiah Games. Afterward one season with Hakoah Ramat Gan, he signed with Hapoel Ashkelon and played alongside fellow Argentine, Carlos Chacana. After a successful time with Ashkelon, Tennenbaum made a stop with Maccabi Kiryat Ata before landing with Hapoel Ra'anana. The Argentine became a fixture in the Ra'anana line-up. Naón Isidro ( he, נאון איזידורו; born 12 November 1987) is an Argentine-Israeli association football player who has been a free agent since he was released from Hapoel Ashkelon in June 2011. Playing career Isidoro arrived in Israel and first trialled with Maccabi Netanya. Actor Dubie Gal acted as the players agent and suggested Isidoro trial with Netanya to one of the club's supporters. The club were short on strikers and were attracted by the prospect of Isidoro not counting as a foreigner because he is Jewish. Isidoro failed to impress then manager, Reuven Atar and the club decided not to sign him. Isidoro then joined Hapoel Haifa on trial before landing a spot with Hapoel Nazareth Illit. Carlos Chacana ( he, קרלוס צ'קאנה; born 23 June 1976) is an Argentine-Israeli professional footballer who plays as a winger fo Agudat HaMakhtesh. Born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Carlos Chacana was raised in Tucumán Province in Argentina by his mother and grandfather, after his father left when he was a child. Bryan Man ( he, בריאן מן; born December 8, 1983) is an Argentine-Israeli professional football (soccer) player. Biography Early life Man made aliyah with his family in 1998 under the Law of Return. His parents had a difficult time adapting to live in Israel, so they returned to Argentina. Bryan and his sister Michelle returned to Israel though. Yuval Naim ( he, יובל נעים; born 22 November 1967) is an Israeli former football player and a manager. He is of a Tunisian-Jewish descent. Career Player career Yuval Naim grew up and played as a centre back in the youth academy of Hapoel Ramat Gan and in the mid-80's he was selected to the senior squad, where he received the number 5, and in 1989, he was a partner in their promotion to Liga Leumit, first division at the time. However, after just one season they been relegated to the second tier. 2015–16 Toto Cup Leumit
The 2015–16 Toto Cup Leumit was the 26th season of the second tier League Cup (as a separate competition) since its introduction. It was held in two stages. First, sixteen Liga Leumit teams were divided into four regionalized groups, from which the winners and runners-up advanced to the quarter-finals. Quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final were then played as one-legged matches. The defending cup holders were Hapoel Bnei Lod, having won the cup on its previous edition. The 2015–16 Liga Leumit was the 17th season as second tier since its re-alignment in 1999 and the 74th season of second-tier football in Israel. A total of sixteen teams were contesting in the league, including eleven sides from the 2014–15 season, the three promoted teams from 2014–15 Liga Alef and the two relegated teams from 2014–15 Israeli Premier League.
