Hap Emms Memorial Trophy
The Hap Emms Memorial Trophy is awarded to the outstanding goaltender at the Memorial Cup of the Canadian Hockey League. The award is named after Leighton "Hap" Emms, a former NHL player, who had a 33 year presence in the Ontario Hockey Association as a coach, owner, general manager, pioneer of the game. During his involvement with the Barrie Flyers, Niagara Falls Flyers, and St. Catharines Black Hawks between 1945 and 1978; his teams appeared in eight Memorial Cup tournaments, winning four times. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. 1978 Memorial Cup
The 1978 Memorial Cup occurred May 6–13 at the Sudbury Community Arena in Sudbury, Ontario, and at the Sault Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It was the 60th annual Memorial Cup competition and determined the major junior ice hockey champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Participating teams were the winners of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League which were the Peterborough Petes, Trois-Rivières Draveurs and New Westminster Bruins. New Westminster won their second Memorial Cup in a row, defeating Peterborough in the final game. Sherbrooke Castors
The Sherbrooke Castors or Beavers (in English) was the name of two different junior ice hockey teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and another team in the Quebec Eastern Provincial Hockey League. Both later franchises played at the Palais des Sports in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Earlier Castors The earlier Sherbrooke Beavers were a senior ice hockey team which won the 1965 Allan Cup, and previously played in the Quebec Eastern Provincial Hockey League, an amateur league and team from 1959 to 1962. Original Castors The Sherbrooke Castors (1969-1982) moved to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec in 1982, named the Saint-Jean Castors. In 1989 they were renamed the Saint-Jean Lynx. 1982 Memorial Cup
The 1982 Memorial Cup was held May 8–15, 1982, at the Robert Guertin Arena in Hull, Quebec. It was the 64th annual Memorial Cup competition and determined the major junior ice hockey champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The champions of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL) – the Kitchener Rangers, Sherbrooke Castors and Portland Winter Hawks respectively – competed for the championship in a double round-robin tournament. The Winter Hawks became the first American-based team to compete for the trophy, while the Rangers defeated the Castors in the final to capture their first Memorial Cup championship. Cornwall Royals
The Cornwall Royals were a junior ice hockey team based in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. The team played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 1969 to 1981, and the Ontario Hockey League from 1981 to 1992. This team shared its name with other Cornwall Royals teams that played in the QSHL, MMJHL, or OHA-B. History From 1961 until 1969, the Cornwall Royals were successful members of the Central Junior A Hockey League (CJHL). Corrado Micalef
Corrado Micalef (born April 20, 1961) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey goaltender who played five seasons with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1986. He later spent several years playing in Europe, retiring in 2002. Playing career Born in Montreal, Quebec, Micalef was drafted 44th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 1981 after a standout junior career with the Sherbrooke Castors. In 1980, he won the Jacques Plante Memorial Trophy for having the lowest goals against average in the high scoring QMJHL. He also represented Canada at the 1981 World Junior Championships before turning pro the next season. Micalef split the 1981–82 season between the NHL and the IHL's Kalamazoo Wings. Peterborough Petes
The Peterborough Petes are a junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League. The team has played at the Peterborough Memorial Centre in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, since 1956, and is the oldest continuously operating team in the league. History The Petes were born on October 1, 1956 when the Kitchener Canucks relocated to Peterborough after the 1955–56 season. Rick LaFerriere
Richard Jacques LaFerrière (born January 3, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. His only NHL appearance came on February 23, 1982 when he was called in to relieve Chico Resch of goaltending duties at start of the third period in a game against the Detroit Red Wings. LaFerrière was member of the Tulsa Oilers ( CHL) team that suspended operations on February 16, 1984, playing only road games for final six weeks of 1983-84 season. Despite this adversity, the team went on to win the league's championship. After retiring from professional hockey, he went into the real estate business, and joined Chay Realty RE/MAX office in Barrie, Ontario. Playing career LaFerrière was born in Hawkesbury, Ontario. Brandon Wheat Kings
The Brandon Wheat Kings are a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Brandon, Manitoba. They are members of the Western Hockey League (WHL) since joining the league in the 1967–68 season. Previously, they played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), with the exception of two seasons in the mid-1960s when they played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The team was a successor to the Brandon Wheat City senior team that participated in the 1904 Stanley Cup Challenge, losing to the Ottawa Senators. The team was known as the Brandon Elks for a short time in the late 1930s. They won eight Turnbull Cup Championships as Manitoba Junior Champions in 1939, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1960, 1962, 1963, and 1964.
