Hansuke Nakamura
was a Japanese jujutsu practitioner. He was one of the best regarded jujutsu stylists in Japan before the rise of judo, and remains as the most famous exponent of the Ryōi Shintō-ryū school. Biography First challenges The son of feudal lord Hanzaemon Nakamura, he was born under the given name of Kinpachi before adopting Hansuke. He started his training under Ryōi Shintō-ryū master Saizo Shimosaka, and eventually known as a fearsome fighter not only due to his skill, but also to his large size for a Japanese man of his time, being 1,76m tall. Through the years Nakamura, his training partner Shogo Uehara and the Sekiguchi-ryū artists Tetsutaro Hisatomi and Danzo Naka were known as the four strongest jujutsu fighters in Kurume, reaching fame throughout the entire nation. The of the Empire of Japan comprised numerous police services, in many cases with overlapping jurisdictions. History and background During the Tokugawa bakufu (1603–1867), police functions in Japan operated through appointed town magistrates of ''samurai'' status, who served simultaneously as chiefs of police, prosecutors and judges. These magistrates were assisted by a professional police-force led by officers who were also of ''samurai'' status. In turn, the ''samurai'' officers were assisted by deputized commoners known as ''jittemochi'', who were granted powers of arrest. Tomoe Nage
is one of the traditional forty Throw (grappling), throws of jujutsu and Judo. It belongs to the third group (Judo Lists#Sankyo, Sankyo) of the traditional throwing list, the traditional Gokyo (no waza), and the current List_of_Kodokan_judo_techniques#Nage-waza_(throwing_techniques), 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. Tomoe nage is categorized as a front sacrifice technique or sutemi waza, Mae-sutemi, because the technique is not a sweep or a trip and tori falls back in front of uke while throwing uke. It is also one of Danzan Ryu's twenty throws in the Danzan Ryu Lists, Nagete list. Yōshin-ryū
("The School of the Willow Heart") is a common name for one of several different martial traditions founded in Japan during the Edo period. The most popular and well-known was the Yōshin-ryū founded by physician Akiyama Shirōbei Yoshitoki at Nagasaki Kyushu in 1642. The Akiyama line of Yōshin-ryū is perhaps the most influential school of jūjutsu to have existed in Japan. By the late Edo Period Akiyama Yōshin-ryū had spread from its primary base in Fukuoka Prefecture Kyushu, throughout Japan. By the Meiji era, Yōshin-ryū had spread overseas to Europe and North America, and to Australia and South Africa by the late Shōwa era. Hikosuke Totsuka
was a Japanese jujutsu master of the Yoshin-ryū school. Under his leadership, the Totsuka-ha Yoshin-ryū was the largest jujutsu organization in Japan, as well as the last great school of this art, until the rise of Kodokan judo. Biography He was the elder son of Hidetsuka Totsuka, the founder of the Totsuka branch of Yoshin-ryū jujutsu. While he was learning the family art, Hikosuke served the feudal Numazu Domain in Suruga Province from 1830 until 1837, in which he inherited leadership of the Totsuka family. In 1860, his prestige in the teaching of jujutsu carried to him to an audience with Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi, whom Totsuka showed his style by performing kata in his presence. Iemochi was impressed, so Totsuka started working for the Tokugawa Shogunate as a jujutsu teacher at the Kobusho academy.
