Record Label
A record label, or record company, is a brand or trademark of music recordings and music videos, or the company that owns it. Sometimes, a record label is also a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos, while also conducting talent scouting and development of new artists, and maintaining contracts with recording artists and their managers. The term "record label", derives from the circular label in the center of a vinyl record which prominently displays the manufacturer's name, along with other information. Within the mainstream music industry, recording artists have traditionally been reliant upon record labels to broaden their consumer base, market their albums, and promote their singles on streaming services, radio, and television. Reception The Absolute Sound's Bill Milkowski observed "For 20 years inventive trumpeter-cornetist Ron Miles has had a special musical relationship with guitarist Bill Frisell, and this trio outing unites them with drummer Brian Blade. ... Miles and Frisell demonstrate a rare musical telepathy".Milkowski, BThe Absolute Sound Review accessed April 29, 2019 In JazzTimes Britt Robson wrote "Frisell sidles into projects led by his longtime friend and cohort, cornetist-trumpeter Ron Miles. ''Circuit Rider'' continues the lineage of their duet disc, ''Heaven'', from 2002, and ''Quiver'' a decade later, which inaugurated their current trio by adding Brian Blade on drums. Don Byron Plays The Music Of Mickey Katz
''Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz'' is an album by clarinetist Don Byron featuring music associated with comedian and musician Mickey Katz which was released on the Nonesuch label in 1993. Reception The Allmusic review by Bob Tarte stated "Playing Katz's songs demands prodigious chops, hence the attraction of Katz to molecule-splitting clarinetist Don Byron, who demonstrates nerve presenting Katz the monologist as the equal of Katz the composer. In sum, convoluted, kaleidoscopic silliness topped with Byron's usual dazzling self". "I was staggered, bewildered, touched and moved," was the reaction of actor-director Joel Grey, the son of Mickey Katz. "It was like my father, who died . . . years ago, was inside of him." Nonesuch Records
Nonesuch Records is an American record company and label owned by Warner Music Group, distributed by Warner Records (formerly called Warner Bros. Records), and based in New York City. Founded by Jac Holzman in 1964 as a budget classical label, Nonesuch has developed into a label that records critically acclaimed music from a wide range of genres. Robert Hurwitz was president of the company from 1984 to 2017. History Founding Nonesuch was founded in early 1964 by Jac Holzman to produce "fine records at the same price as a trade paperback", which would be half the price of a normal LP. To achieve this he initially licensed European recordings of classical music as it would be too expensive to record new material. Originally the label concentrated heavily on chamber and baroque music, often with (then) unique repertory, and typically sold at less-than-premium prices. Upon its formation, Nonesuch operated as a subsidiary label of Elektra Records, which Holzman had launched in 1950. In ...
