The Hans Sigrist Prize is awarded by the Hans Sigrist Foundation, at the University of Bern in Switzerland. The Foundation's benefactor Hans Sigrist died on December 30, 1982. The Foundation was founded in 1993. The Foundation's first award was presented in 1994. The Hans Sigrist Prize is for mid-career researchers in order to boost those researcher's potential impact. Every year, the Foundation asks faculty members at the University of Bern to propose a prize field. The Foundation board chooses a field from those proposals and selects a chair for the prize search committee. Stephen Elledge
Stephen Joseph Elledge (born August 7, 1956, in Paris Illinois) is an American geneticist. He is currently the Gregor Mendel Professor of Genetics and Medicine in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and in the Division of Genetics at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and is an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He earned his B.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and his Ph.D. in biology from MIT. His research is focused on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic response to DNA damage. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator since 1993. Joseph P. Newhouse (born February 24, 1942) is an American economist and the John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University, as well as the Director of the Division of Health Policy Research and of the Interfaculty Initiative on Health Policy. At Harvard, he is a member of the four faculties at Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Harvard T.H. František Šmahel (born 17 August 1934 in Trhová Kamenice) is a Czech historian of medieval political and intellectual history, known for his works about Hussitism, universities in the Middle Ages, humanism, and Monarch representation in the Middle Ages. Gerald Francis "Jerry" Joyce (born 1956) is a senior vice president and chief science officer at Salk Institute for Biological Studies and was previously the director of the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation. Emilio Gentile (born 1946, in Bojano) is an Italian historian and professor, specializing in the history, ideology, and culture of Italian fascism. Gentile is considered one of Italy's foremost cultural historians of the Italian Fascist regime and its ideology. He studied under the renowned Italian historian Renzo De Felice and wrote a book about him. Gentile serves as Professor of History at the Sapienza University of Rome. David Mark Richardson (born 16 June 1958) is a South African ecologist, particularly known for his work on invasive species, especially invasive trees and shrubs. Biography Richardson was born in Pretoria. He received his BSc degree in Forestry from Stellenbosch University in 1981 and his PhD in Botany from the University of Cape Town in 1989.
