Hans Pöögelmann
Hans Pöögelmann (30 December 1875 Aidu Parish, Viljandi County, Estonia – 27 January 1938, Moscow, Soviet Union) was an Estonian and Soviet Russian socialist, and later communist politician, journalist and poet. In 1917, he was elected member of the Estonian Provincial Assembly and became a leading figure in the local Bolshevik movement. After 1919, Pöögelmann continued his political activities in the USSR. In 1938, he was arrested and executed in Moscow by the Soviet Stalinist regime. Biography Pöögelmann was born in an Estonian farmer's family. After graduation, he worked as a teacher, and later as journalist in Estonian-language newspapers ''Teataja'' and ''Postimees''. He continued his studies in Leipzig, Germany where he became a committed Marxist and joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1905. The Communist International (Comintern), also known as the Third International, was a Soviet-controlled international organization founded in 1919 that advocated world communism.
