Hans Graf (pianist)
Hans Graf (16 March 1928 – 9 January 1994) was an Austrian pianist and professor of piano. Life Graf was born and grew up in Vienna as a son of police lawyer Josef Graf (1895–1966), wirklicher Hofrat (an honorary title conferred on senior civil servants), and the former governess Rosa (née Kramreiter; 1885–1959). He received piano and violin instruction already as a child. In the final phase of World War II, Graf was drafted as a high school student to serve in an anti-aircraft defense unit where he served in Langenzersdorf as well as in the 6th district of Vienna (Esterházypark). He passed his high school graduation exam in 1946 and began to study architecture at the Vienna University of Technology. The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (german: link=no, Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, abbreviated MDW) is an Austrian university located in Vienna, established in 1817. With a student body of over three thousand, it is the largest institution of its kind in Austria, and one of the largest in the world. Hans Sittner
Hans Sittner (August 9, 1903 - May 9, 1990) was an Austrian lawyer, music teacher and author, and pianist. Sittner was born in Linz. He started his music studies in the local Bruckner-Konservatorium in 1914. He finished in 1921. From 1921 to 1925 he studied law at the University of Vienna. In 1927 he graduated from the Vienna Academy of Music, where he had started studying in 1925. In 1946 he was hired as Director of the Academy and in 1949 he also became president. He retained these positions until 1971. Sittner was involved with the Mozartgemeinde Wien, where he established the Wiener Flötenuhr prize. He was president of the Austrian-Romanian Society (Österreichisch-Rumänische Gesellschaft) from 1968 to 1977. He was the first president of the Vienna International Chopin Society (Internationale Chopin Gesellschaft in Wien). He received a silver Mozarteum Mozart Medal in 1971. Emperor Pedro I of Brazil founded the National Order of the Southern Cross ( pt, Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul) as a Brazilian order of chivalry on 1 December 1822. The order aimed to commemorate the independence of Brazil (7 September 1822) and the coronation of Pedro I (1 December 1822). The name derives from the geographical position of the country, under the constellation of the Southern Cross and also in memory of the name – ''Terra de Santa Cruz'' (Land of the Holy Cross) – given to Brazil following its first invasion by Europeans in 1500. ''The Art of Fugue'', or ''The Art of the Fugue'' (german: Die Kunst der Fuge, links=no), BWV 1080, is an incomplete musical work of unspecified instrumentation by Johann Sebastian Bach. Written in the last decade of his life, ''The Art of Fugue'' is the culmination of Bach's experimentation with monothematic instrumental works. This work consists of fourteen fugues and four canons in D minor, each using some variation of a single principal subject, and generally ordered to increase in complexity. "The governing idea of the work", as put by Bach specialist Christoph Wolff, "was an exploration in depth of the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single musical subject."
