Hannibal Evans Lloyd
Hannibal Evans Lloyd (1771–1847) was an English linguist and translator. Life Born in London, he was son of Henry Humphrey Evans Lloyd and Mary, sister of the Chevalier de Johnstone. An orphan while still young, he was brought up by relatives. In the spring of 1800 he settled at Hamburg. At a late stage of the Napoleonic Wars, the city was occupied by the French army, Lloyd fought in its defence, and then escaped. In 1813 Evans received an appointment in the Foreign Office. He retained the post till his death, at Blackheath on 15 July 1847. Works Lloyd was a contributor to the '' Literary Gazette'' from its founding in 1817, mainly on archæology and the fine arts. A friend of Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Lloyd translated with him most of ''Der Messias'', but did not publish his version. Henry Humphrey Evans Lloyd
Henry Humphrey Evans Lloyd (c.1718 – 19 June 1783) was a Welsh army officer and military writer. He fought for the French against the Austrians, the Jacobite forces of Charles Stuart against the British, the Austrians against the Prussians and the Prussians against the Austrians (during the same war), and the Russians against the Turks. He also undertook various diplomatic missions for Britain. His writings on military theory were studied by George Washington and George S. Patton, and were used by J. F. C. Fuller to espouse a science of war. Hans Egede Saabye
Hans Egede Saabye (July 1746 – 31 August 1817) was a Danish priest and a missionary to Greenland. He was born on the island of Strynø in southern Denmark. He was the son of parish priest Jørgen Saabye and Petronella Egede, one of the daughters of Hans Egede, the apostle of Greenland, whose Bergen Company had begun the Danish-Norwegian settlement there in 1721. He graduated from Roskilde secondary school in 1764 and earned a degree in theology in 1767. In 1768, he was admitted to The Greenland Seminary (''Seminarium Groenlandicum'') and was instructed in the Greenlandic language by his maternal uncle, Poul Egede. In 1770, he was ordained into the ministry of the Church of Denmark. He was married to Vibeke Margrethe Thye (1748-1833) in April 1770. In the same year, he went as a missionary to Claushavn and Christianshåb in Greenland. Ernst, Baron Von Feuchtersleben
Baron Ernst von Feuchtersleben (full name: Ernst Maria Johann Karl ''Freiherr'' von Feuchtersleben; 29 April 18063 September 1849), was an Austrian physician, poet and philosopher. He was a member of the von Feuchtersleben Family Life He was born as a son of Ernst von Feuchtersleben (1765–1834). He was of an old Saxon noble family. His older half-brother was Eduard von Feuchtersleben (1798–1857), son of Ernst von Feuchtersleben from his first marriage. His father, a man of serious and stern character, attained the rank of aulic councillor in the Austrian civil service. He attended the Theresian Academy in his native city, and in 1825 entered its university as a student of medicine. Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann (13 May 1785, Wismar5 December 1860, Bonn) was a German historian and politician. Biography He came of an old Hanseatic family of Wismar, then controlled by Sweden. His father, who was burgomaster of the town, intended him to study theology, but Friedrich preferred classical philology, which he studied from 1802 to 1806 at the University of Copenhagen, University of Halle, and then again at Copenhagen. After finishing his studies, he translated some of the Greek tragic poets, and The Clouds of Aristophanes. But he was also interested in modern literature and philosophy; and the troubles of the times, of which he had personal experience, aroused in him a strong feeling of German patriotism, though throughout his life he was always proud of his connection with Scandinavia, and Gustavus Adolphus was his particular hero. Gustav Friedrich Waagen
Gustav Friedrich Waagen (11 February 1794 – 15 July 1868) was a German art historian. His opinions were greatly respected in England, where he was invited to give evidence before the royal commission inquiring into the condition and future of the National Gallery, for which he was a leading candidate to become director. He died on a visit to Copenhagen in 1868. Biography Waagen was born in Hamburg, the son of a painter and a nephew and lover of the poet Ludwig Tieck. Having passed through the college of Hirschberg, Silesia (modern Jelenia Góra), he volunteered for service in the Napoleonic campaign of 1813–14, and on his return attended the lectures at Breslau University. Sarah Austin ( Taylor; 1793–1867) was an English editor, linguist and translator from German-language books. She did much to make Germany familiar to the English. Life Born Sarah Taylor in Norwich, England in 1793, she was the youngest child of John Taylor, a yarn maker and hymn writer from a locally well-known Unitarian family. Her education was overseen by her mother, Susannah Taylor. She became conversant in Latin, French, German and Italian. Her six brothers and sisters included Edward Taylor (1784–1863), a singer and music professor, John Taylor (1779–1863), a mining engineer, Richard Taylor (1781–1858), a printer and editor and publisher of scientific works. Friedrich Ludwig Georg von Raumer (14 May 1781 – 14 June 1873) was a German historian. He was the first scientific historian to popularise history in German. He travelled extensively and served in German legislative bodies. Biography He was born at Wörlitz in Anhalt-Dessau. His father (who died in 1822), was ''Kammerdirektor'' (i.e. chamber director, head official in the financial department) in Anhalt and did great service to agriculture. After studying at the Joachimsthal Gymnasium, Berlin, and at the universities of Halle and Göttingen, Raumer began to practise law. He entered the Prussian civil service in 1801 as a civil magistrate, and rose in the service to become councillor to Chancellor Hardenberg in 1809. Carl Friedrich Philipp (Karl Friedrich Philipp) von Martius (17 April 1794 – 13 December 1868) was a German botanist and explorer. Life Martius was born at Erlangen, the son of Prof Ernst Wilhelm Martius, court apothecary. He graduated PhD from Erlangen University in 1814, publishing as his thesis a critical catalogue of plants in the university's botanical garden. After that he continued to devote himself to botanical study, and in 1817 he and Johann Baptist von Spix were sent to Brazil by Maximilian I Joseph, the king of Bavaria. They travelled from Rio de Janeiro through several of the southern and eastern provinces of Brazil and travelled up the Amazon River to Tabatinga, as well as exploring some of its larger tributaries.
