Hannah Weyer
Hannah Weyer is an American filmmaker and writer living in New York, who has written, directed and produced narrative and documentary films. Her films have screened at the Human Rights Watch, Sundance and the New York Film Festivals and won recognitions, including awards from LoCarno, Sundance, Doubletake Documentary and South by Southwest Film Festivals. Her documentaries, La Boda and La Escuela (distributed by Women Make Movies) aired on PBS as part of the POV-American Documentary series. Screenwriting credits include work that premiered on HBO, including '' Life Support'' (2007), directed by Nelson George, and which earned a Golden Globe award for its lead actress, Queen Latifah. Women Make Movies
Women Make Movies is a non-profit feminist media arts organization based in New York City. Founded by Ariel Dougherty and Sheila Paige with Dolores Bargowski, WMM was first a feminist production collective that emerged from city-wide Women's Liberation meetings in September 1969. They produced four films by 1973. Dougherty and Paige incorporated the organization in March 1972 as a community based workshop to teach film to everyday women. A distribution service was also begun as an earned income program. In the mid-1970s a membership was created that screened and distributed members' work. In the early 1980s focus shifted to concentrate on distribution of independent films by and about women. WMM also provides production assistance to women filmmakers. ''Life Support'' is a 2007 American drama television film directed by Nelson George and starring Queen Latifah. It is loosely based on the real-life story of Ana Wallace, an HIV-positive woman. The film premiered January 26, 2007 at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and premiered on HBO on March 10, 2007. Plot Ana Wallace (Queen Latifah) was diagnosed with HIV 11 years ago. She got the virus from shooting cocaine with her boyfriend, Slick (Wendell Pierce). Slick had the virus first but did not tell Ana he had it. Ana is devoted to her work at Life Support, an AIDS outreach group, but she struggles to repair her relationship with her teenage daughter, whom she lost custody of 11 years ago due to her drug addiction. Nelson George
Nelson George (born September 1, 1957) is an American author, columnist, music and culture critic, journalist, and filmmaker. He has been nominated twice for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Biography George attended St. John's University. He was an intern at the ''New York Amsterdam News'' before being hired as black music editor for ''Record World''. He later served as a music editor for ''Billboard'' magazine from 1982 to 1989. While there, George published two books: ''Where Did Our Love Go: The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound'' in 1986, and ''The Death of Rhythm & Blues'' in 1988. He also wrote a column, entitled "Native Son", for the ''Village Voice'' from 1988 to 1992.
