Hannah Enston Building
The Hannah Enston Building is a post-bellum commercial building at 171-173 King St., Charleston, South Carolina. A former building, constructed for furniture dealer William Enston, was burned in a fire in 1861. The replacement building was in place by 1872 when it was included in a bird's eye view map of Charleston. The building was built in the Gothic Revival style with similar decorative elements to 187-189-191 King St., a building built for William Enston sometime after 1848. After the death of William Enston, his property eventually was received by the trustees of a charity which he created to build the William Enston Home, and the trustees sold 171-173 King St. in 1888. From 1888 to 1909, the two halves of the building were separately owned. Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is the largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, the county seat of Charleston County, and the principal city in the Charleston–North Charleston metropolitan area. William Enston Home
The William Enston Home, located at 900 King St., Charleston, South Carolina, is a complex of many buildings all constructed in Romanesque Revival architecture, a rare style in Charleston. Twenty-four cottages were constructed beginning in 1887 along with a memorial chapel at the center with a campanile style tower, and it was reserved for white residents. An infirmary was added in 1931 and later converted into a superintendent's home. In 2006, construction was undertaken on a series of additional cottages which were meant to complete the plan for the community. These cottages, located at the southern edge of the property, are reminiscent of the original design but lack the architectural detail of the originals. Today the complex is owned by the Housing Authority of Charleston and the restored cottages are home to persons of low to moderate income. Earl Mazo
Earl Mazo (July 7, 1919 – February 17, 2007) was an American journalist, author, and government official. Education and early life Born in Warsaw, Poland, Mazo migrated to the United States as a small child with his parents, Sonia and George Mazo. The Mazos settled in Charleston, South Carolina where they lived in the Hannah Enston Building. Mazo would later graduate from Clemson University. During World War II, he served as a public relations officer with the U.S. Army Air Force's 385th Bomb Group and was stationed in the United Kingdom. Career In the first week of May 1943, Mazo crossed the Atlantic Ocean at age 24 as a second lieutenant and a trained bombardier in the Army Air Corps (USAF). He survived a remarkable 32 missions over Europe in the rickety but reliable B-17s of the era, remarkable because the standard task was 25 missions.
