Hank Winston
Henry Rudolph Winston (June 15, 1904 – February 4, 1974) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the 1933 Philadelphia Athletics and the 1936 Brooklyn Dodgers. Winston made his MLB debut with the Athletics on September 30, 1933, against the Boston Red Sox at Shibe Park, pitching 6 innings in relief surrendering 5 earned runs. The Athletics released him the following March. He returned to the majors in 1936 with the Dodgers pitching in 14 games. His only win came on August 15 against the Boston Bees at Ebbets Field when he pitched 5 relief innings in the Dodgers' 6–2 victory. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. In baseball and softball, a relief pitcher or reliever is a pitcher who enters the game after the starting pitcher is removed because of fatigue (medical), fatigue, ineffectiveness, injury, or ejection (sports), ejection, or for other strategic reasons, such as inclement weather delays or pinch hitter substitutions. Relief pitchers are further divided informally into various roles, such as Closer (baseball), closers, setup men, middle relief pitchers, left-handed specialist, left/right-handed specialists, and long relievers.
