Hanford Village George Washington Carver Addition Historic District
The Hanford Village George Washington Carver Addition Historic District is a historic district in the Hanford Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. At the time of nomination, the site consisted of 95 buildings, sites, or structures, 76 of which are contributing. Most are one-and-a-half-story gabled Cape Cod houses with simplified Colonial Revival features. The George Washington Carver Addition is significant as part of a historic suburban municipality built for African American World War II veterans. The district illustrates the struggles and limits that Black citizens had in a segregated society. The district is also notable as the home of many of the Tuskegee Airmen while they operated out of the nearby Lockbourne Army Airport. Columbus () is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. Cape Cod (house)
A Cape Cod house is a low, broad, single or double-story frame building with a moderately-steep-pitched gabled roof, a large central chimney, and very little ornamentation. Originating in New England in the 17th century, the simple symmetrical design was constructed of local materials to withstand the stormy weather of Cape Cod. It features a central front door flanked by multipaned windows. The space above the first floor was often left as unfinished attic space, with or without windows on the gable ends. Tuskegee Airmen
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of primarily African American military pilots (fighter and bomber) and airmen who fought in World War II. They formed the 332d Fighter Group and the 477th Fighter Group, 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel. The Tuskegee airmen received praise for their excellent combat record earned while protecting American bombers from enemy fighters. The group was awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations. All black military pilots who trained in the United States trained at Griel Field, Kennedy Field, Moton Field, Shorter Field, and the Tuskegee Army Air Fields. Rickenbacker International Airport
Rickenbacker International Airport is a civil-military public airport south of downtown Columbus, near Lockbourne in southern Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The south end of the airport extends into Pickaway County. The base was named for flying ace and Columbus native Eddie Rickenbacker. It is managed by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which also operates John Glenn Columbus International Airport and Bolton Field. Rickenbacker International is primarily a cargo airport for the city of Columbus, although since 2012 it has served an increasing number of passenger flights as well as charter carriers.
