Handball competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics were held from 9 to 24 August at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium and National Indoor Stadium. Medals were awarded for both men's and women's team events. A National Olympic Committee was permitted to enter one men's team and one women's team in the handball competitions. Thierry Omeyer (born 2 November 1976) is a retired French handball goalkeeper. A member of the French national team since 1999, he has won all major titles with the team: world champion (five times), European champion (three times) and Olympic champion twice. He is widely considered to be one of the best handball goalkeepers of all time, and is the third goalkeeper so far to have been elected best player of the world by the International Handball Federation (the two others being Henning Fritz, in 2004, and Árpád Sterbik, in 2005), what he achieved in 2008. Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson
Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson (born 8 August 1979) is an Icelandic retired handball player and current coach of VfL Gummersbach. A captain of the Iceland men's national handball team, Guðjón Valur broke the world record for most goals scored in international men's handball in 2018. He won silver with the Icelandic handball team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as bronze at the 2010 European Championship. Club career Guðjón started his handball career at a young age with Grótta on Seltjarnarnes. He also played with KA Akureyri and lost the Icelandic championship final in 2001. Alexander Petersson
Alexander Petersson (born Aleksandrs Pētersons 2 July 1980) is a Latvian-born Icelandic former handball player. He was a member of the Icelandic national team from 2005 to 2021, appearing in 186 games. Alexander was voted the Icelandic Sportsperson of the Year in 2010 by the Icelandic Sport Press Association. Sverre Andreas Jakobsson (born 8 February 1977) is an Icelandic-Norwegian handball manager and former player. With the Icelandic national handball team, he competed at two Olympics, winning the silver medal at the 2008 Olympics. Playing career Sverre started his career with KA at the age of 16 and helped the team win the Icelandic Cup in 1995 and the Icelandic championship in 1997. He won the national championship again in 2006 with Fram. Coaching career Sverre was hired as player-coach for Akureyri Handboltafélag in 2014.
