Hancock County, Georgia
Hancock County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,735. The county seat is Sparta. The county was created on December 17, 1793, and named for John Hancock, a Founding Father of the American Revolution. Hancock County is included in the Milledgeville, Georgia Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Before the Civil War, Hancock County was developed for cotton plantations, as international demand was high for the commodity. The land was developed and the cotton cultivated and processed by thousands of enslaved African Americans. This area is classified as part of the Black Belt of the United States, primarily due to its fertile soil. It was later also associated with the slave society. Enslaved persons made up 61% of the total county population in the 1850 Census. John Hancock
John Hancock ( – October 8, 1793) was an American Founding Father, merchant, statesman, and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution. He served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. White Plains is a city in Greene County, Georgia, United States. The population was 284 at the 2010 census. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated White Plains in 1834. According to tradition, White Plains was so named on account of their white sandy soil. Geography White Plains is located in southeastern Greene County at (33.477002, -83.038404). The southeast border of the city follows the Hancock County line. Georgia State Route 15 (Old Greensboro Road) passes through the center of town, leading north to Siloam and south to Sparta. State Route 77 (SR 77) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of Hancock, Greene, Oglethorpe, Elbert, and Hart counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Route description SR 77 begins at an intersection with SR 16, at a point northwest of Sparta, in Hancock County. It heads northeast to an intersection with SR 15. They head concurrent to the north-northwest, passing through rural areas of the county and cross into Greene County. They pass through White Plains and curve to the northwest to the town of Siloam.
