Hanalei Elementary School
The Hanalei Elementary School, on Kuhio Highway in Hanalei, Hawaii, is a public elementary school of the Hawaii Department of Education. It formerly occupied a historic school building that was built in 1926. This building was listed on the Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places in 1988 and on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Alternatively, the name ''Hanalei'' also means "crescent bay" and may be indicative of the shape of Hanalei Bay. Hanalei can also be translated as lei valley, referring to the rainbows that color the valley and encircle Hanalei like a wreath. A bungalow is a small house or cottage that is either single-story or has a second story built into a sloping roof (usually with dormer windows), and may be surrounded by wide verandas. American Craftsman
American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style architecture, Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The name "Craftsman" was appropriated from furniture-maker Gustav Stickley, whose magazine ''The Craftsman'' was first published in 1901. The architectural style was most widely used in small-to-medium-sized Southern California single-family homes from about 1905, so that the smaller-scale Craftsman style became known alternatively as " California bungalow". The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) is a statewide public education system in the United States. Hawaiʻi Register Of Historic Places
The Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places (HRHP) is a listing of sites of historical significance located in Hawaii. It is maintained by the Hawaiʻi State Historic Preservation Division. It was established when the Hawaii State Legislature passed Chapter 6E in 1976, in an effort to preserve its historic sites, as economic growth on the islands threatened to destroy numerous state landmarks. As of February 2022, there are 1,054 properties listed on the state register, many of which are also on the National Register of Historic Places. Nomination To be listed on the Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places, a property or district needs to meet several criteria, including all of those set by the National Register of Historic Places.
