Hammal O Mahganj
''Hammal O Mahganj'' is a Pakistani Balochi-language film released in 1976. It is known as the first feature Balochi film. The film could not make it to the cinemas due to political pressure. The film was produced by Anwar Iqbal who also played the lead role in the film along with Nadir Shah Adil, Aneeta Gul, Saqi and Noor Mohammad Lashari. Set in the 15th century when Portuguese discovered Indian subcontinent, the story revolves around a man who stands against the Portuguese for the honour of his motherland. The film was screened in 2017 on 28 February, Baloch Culture day. Balochi Language
Balochi or Baluchi () is an Iranian language spoken primarily in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. In addition, there are speakers in Oman, the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, Turkmenistan, East Africa and in diaspora communities in other parts of the world. The total number of speakers, according to '' Ethnologue'', is 8.75 million. Of these, 6.28 million are in Pakistan. According to Brian Spooner, Balochi belongs to the Western Iranian subgroup, and its original homeland is suggested to be around the central Caspian region. Classification Balochi is an Indo-European language, belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the family. As an Iranian language it is classified in the Northwestern group. Balochi Cinema
Balochi cinema refers to the Balochi-language film industry in Pakistan, Iran, and among the Baloch diaspora. History The first Balochi feature film, ''Hammal O Mahganj'', was produced by Anwar Iqbal and released in Pakistan in 1976. However, the film never made it to the screen amidst protests by cultural activists who alleged it misrepresented Baloch culture. A slogan used by the protest movement was "Balochi film chalay ga tou cinema jalay ga" (If Balochi films are screened, cinemas will be burnt). Analysts believe the film's release became politicised, as PPP activists favoured the film while Baloch nationalist groups opposed it. Iqbal later arranged a private screening of the film to address the reservations, where Sindh's labour minister-cum-PPP leader Abdullah Baloch was a key attendee. Anwar Iqbal
Anwar Iqbal Baloch ( ur, ) (December 25, 1949 – July 1, 2021) was a Pakistani television actor and director, who achieved fame with the hit Pakistani drama series "Shama." Afterwards he went to star in "Akhri Chattan" (آخری چٹان) by Naseem Hijazi in the early 1980s. He was credited with the production of the first Balochi feature film, ''Hammal o Mahganj'' in Pakistan. Early life Iqbal is the son of a well-known politician from Balochistan, Mr. ''Haji Muhammed Iqbal Baloch'', who played prominent role in the independence of Pakistan as well as in highlighting the importance of "Gawadar" port to the Pakistani government.
