Hamilton RFC, Sea Point
Hamilton Rugby Football Club was founded in March 1875 in Cape Town, and states that it is the oldest rugby union club in South Africa. Hamilton RFC played in the first official match at Newlands Stadium on 31 May 1890. Origins The club's inception occurred when a Mr. W. Nightingale called together a meeting of football enthusiasts at the offices of Messrs. Hamilton Ross & Co. The meeting took the name of their club from a Hamilton Football Club (est. 1868) in Scotland of which Nightingale had been a member. The club merged with Sea Point Rugby Football Club in 1910 and in 1914 adopted its current jersey colours of three wide bands of red, black and yellow. Bill Maclagan
William Edward Maclagan (5 April 1858 – 10 October 1926) was a Scottish international rugby union forward who played club rugby for London Scottish F.C. Maclagan was one of the longest-serving international rugby players during the early development of the sport, and was awarded 25 caps for Scotland. He played international rugby for thirteen seasons, a Scottish record for sixty years,Griffiths (1987), pg 2:7. and led the first official British Isles team on its 1891 tour of South Africa. Maclagan's contributions to the early development of rugby were recognised in 2009 with his induction into the IRB Hall of Fame. T. E. C. "Tommy" Hobson (26 March 1881 – 2 September 1937) was a South African international rugby union player. Hobson played his club rugby at Hamilton and represented West Province at both cricket and rugby. He appeared in his only Test match during the tour of South Africa by the British Isles team in 1903. Charles "Hasie" Versfeld (24 September 1866 – 6 January 1941) was a South African international rugby union player. Born in Wynberg, Cape Town, he was educated at Green Point Grammar School before playing provincial rugby for Western Province. Versfeld made his only appearance for South Africa in the 3rd Test of Great Britain's 1891 tour, he played on the wing. Oupa Versfeld
Marthinus "Oupa" Versfeld (15 May 1860 – 1 September 1931) was a South African international rugby union player. Early life and family Born in Constantia and educated in Cape Town, where he attended SACS, Versfeld was the oldest of five brothers, four of whom played representative rugby. He and his second youngest brother, Hasie represented South Africa. His brother Loftus played for Transvaal and as an administrator was a founding member of the Eastern Province Rugby Union and of the Pretoria Rugby Subunion, which in 1938 became Northern Transvaal. The rugby stadium, Loftus Versfeld is named after him. The middle brother, Jan Hendrik Christoffel (John) represented Western Province from 1885 to 1889. Ben Duff
Benjamin Robert Duff (16 October 1867 – 25 June 1943) was a South African rugby union international. He also played a first-class cricket match with Western Province. Personal Duff, born in Swellendam, had a brother Colin who represented Rhodesia at cricket and rugby. He married Isabel Watkinson. Cricket career Duff's cricket match was against Natal during the 1889/90 South African cricket season.
