Halsnøy
Halsnøya or Halsnøy is an island in Kvinnherad municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies between the Hardangerfjorden and Skånevikfjorden. The island has about 2,300 inhabitants (2008) and it is the most populated island in Kvinnherad municipality. Prior to 2008, it was the most populated island in Norway without a direct connection to land, but the Halsnøy Tunnel opened that year, finally connecting it to the mainland by road. There is a regular ferry connection from southern Halsnøy to the neighboring islands of Fjelbergøya and Borgundøya, located just south of Halsnøy. History The island was the site of the Halsnøy Abbey (closed in 1536), which once was one of the richest monasteries in Norway. Today it is a highly popular tourist attraction. In 1896, one of the oldest boats recovered in Norway was found in the Toftevåg bay on the north side of the island. Halsnøy Abbey
Halsnøy Abbey (''Halsnøy kloster'') was a house of Augustinian Canons located on the island of Halsnøy on the Hardangerfjord at Kvinnherad in Vestland, Norway. History Halsnøy Abbey was one of the richest monasteries in medieval era Norway. The monastery is believed to have been founded in 1163 or 1164 by jarl Erling Skakke (1115–1179) as an inducement to Archbishop Øystein to crown Erling's seven-year-old son, Magnus Erlingsson, who reigned as King of Norway from 1161 to 1184. The new foundation attracted many generous endowments and soon became one of the wealthiest in Norway. The buildings were severely damaged in a fire about a hundred years later, and were rebuilt in Gothic style about 1300. The monastery was dissolved in 1536 during the Reformation and its lands and assets were confiscated by the Crown. Halsnøy Tunnel
The Halsnøy Tunnel ( no, Halsnøytunnelen) is a subsea road tunnel which connects the island of Halsnøy to the mainland in Kvinnherad Municipality in Vestland county in Norway. The northern end of the tunnel is at Sunde, just south of Husnes, and the southern entrance to the tunnel is just north of the village of Sæbøvik on Halsnøy. The long tunnel reaches a depth of below mean sea level. Located on County Road 500, it opened on 8 March 2008 and is as of May 2019 a toll road. The project included of new road and cost 427 million Norwegian krone. Prior to the opening of this tunnel in 2008, the island of Halsnøy was the most populous island in Norway with no road connection. Eidsvik, Hordaland
Eidsvik is a village in Kvinnherad municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northwestern end of the island of Halsnøya, just west of the village of Sæbøvik. The village lies on a thin, narrow isthmus-like peninsula sticking out into the Hardangerfjorden. Eid Church is located in this village, and the church serves the whole island of Halsnøy. Høylandsbygd
Høylandsbygd is a village in Kvinnherad municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the eastern part of the island of Halsnøya. It is one of the largest urban areas on the island, just after Sæbøvik and Eidsvik. While originally one of the island's largest farming villages, today it is renowned for its position in Norwegian shipping industry. Fjelbergøya
Fjelbergøya is an island in Kvinnherad Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies on the south side of the Hardangerfjorden, between the islands of Borgundøya (to the south) and Halsnøya (to the northeast). These three neighboring islands are located very close together, only a few hundred meters separate them at certain points. Historically, this island was the centre of the old municipality of Fjelberg. Today, the islands of Fjelbergøya and Borgundøya are still often referred to as ''Fjelberg''. The island is only accessible by the sea, either using ferries or personal boats. There are regular ferry routes from Leirvik- Borgundøya-Fjelbergøya-Halsnøy- Utbjoa, connecting several islands to the mainland in Vindafjord at Utbjoa. Radiohola
Radiohòla (literal: ''the radio cave'') is a natural shelter used by the Norwegian resistance during the Second World War. It served as a hiding place for a radio that brought news from the British, during a time of which radios were banned and the German occupants arrested and prosecuted those found in possession of one. History Location The cave is located on the island of Halsnøy, 1.5–2 kilometres inland, on the top of a small clearing surrounded by forests, and cannot be seen from low ground, which made it an ideal hiding place for the resistance. Initially only accessible from the topside (making the cave virtually invisible even at close range), the rocks in front of the cave were removed in 1990, to make the cave more easily accessible for tourists and visitors. Borgundøya or Borgundøy is an island in Kvinnherad municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies in the Hardangerfjorden, immediately south of the island of Fjelbergøya. The island has about 79 residents (in 2017), with about four larger village areas spread out around the island. The island is dominated by the tall mountain ''Borgundnuten''. Johannes Malvin Georgsson Eide, usually spelled Johs G. Eide (born 30 October 1937) is a Norwegian businessman, entrepreneur and shipbuilder. He is one of the founding owners, and former CEO of Eide Marine Services. Early life and career Johannes Eide was born in Hоylandsbygd in 1937, as the second of six children. His father, Georg Eide Sr (1896-1951), was a shipbuilder, and ran a shipping plant not far from their home and Johannes inherited many of his father's boat building skills. In 1951, when Eide was two weeks shy of 14 years old, his father died suddenly, and so he left home to work to support his family.
