Hallsville Independent School District is a public school district based in Hallsville, Texas (USA). In addition to Hallsville, the district serves a small portion of Longview as well as rural areas in western Harrison County. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. Hallsville is a city in Harrison County, Texas, Harrison County, Texas, United States, located west of the county seat, Marshall, Texas, Marshall, on U.S. Highway 80. The population was 3,577 at the 2010 census, up from 2,772 at the 2000 census. The 2020 census revealed that Hallsville's population was 4,277. History Past The area was first settled in 1839, when Fort Crawford was built one mile west of the site of present Hallsville by W. C. Crawford as a protection against Indians. In 1849 the fort is reported to have had a post office and a two-story building that served as church, Masonic hall, and school (the only school in western Harrison County until 1868). In 1869, when an independent Southern Pacific Railway crossed a mile north of Fort Crawford, the settlers moved to the railroad and named the new settlement for a railroad official. Harrison County is a county on the eastern border of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 United States census, its population was 68,839. The county seat is Marshall. The county was created in 1839 and organized in 1842. It is named for Jonas Harrison, a lawyer and Texas revolutionary. Developed for cotton plantations by planters from the South, this county had the highest number of enslaved African Americans in Texas before the Civil War. They comprised 59% of the population. Hallsville High School (Texas)
Hallsville High School is a 5A high school located in northwest Harrison County between the cities of Longview and Marshall in rural northeast Texas. In 2011, the school was rated " Recognized" by the Texas Education Agency. History The school opened in a small building with one teacher, Salina Ferrell Smith, before moving into specially constructed quarters on the ground floor of the Masonic Lodge, completed in December 1871. The building was destroyed by fire in 1878 and replaced in 1879. After two expansions of that building, the school moved in 1914 to its own building with six classrooms and an auditorium, which was replaced in 1937 by a white-brick building on approximately the same site. This was replaced in 1958 and again in 1977 by new buildings on different sites. The school's fourth campus opened in fall 2012; the previous campus became the junior high school.
