Half Past Autumn Suite
''Half Past Autumn Suite'' is an album by jazz trumpeter Irvin Mayfield that was released in 2003 as a tribute to Gordon Parks, a photographer and pianist. In 2000, Parks's photographs were given an exhibit at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The CD version of the album contained a CD-ROM with photos from the exhibition that could be downloaded, two videos of recording sessions, and an interview with Parks. Parks and Mayfield performed a duet on "Wind Song". Wynton Marsalis played trumpet on the song "Blue Dawn". His brother, Delfeayo, produced the album and made a guest appearance on trombone. Irvin Mayfield Jr. (born December 23, 1977) is an American trumpeter, composer, bandleader and educator. On November 3, 2021, Mayfield was sentenced to 18 months in prison for defrauding the New Orleans public library system from over one million dollars. Biography Irvin Mayfield, who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, is the youngest of nine children from Joyce Alsanders and Irvin Mayfield Sr. Joyce Alsanders was a schoolteacher in New Orleans’ Upper Ninth Ward. His father, Irvin Mayfield Sr., was a drill sergeant in the United States Army and a boxer who died in the flood after Hurricane Katrina. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Dixieland jazz, also referred to as traditional jazz, hot jazz, or simply Dixieland, is a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. Basin Street Records
Basin Street Records is a Grammy Award-winning independent record label based in New Orleans, Louisiana, that specializes in jazz, funk, and rhythm and blues ( R&B). Basin Street Records was founded in 1997 by Mark Samuels and Tom Thompson. The label arose out of an agreement to release a live album for New Orleans jazz trumpeter and vocalist Kermit Ruffins, who was managed by Thompson. In mid-1998 Samuels bought Thompson's interest in the company. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded the Basin Street Records office and Mark Samuels's home. Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks (November 30, 1912 – March 7, 2006) was an American photographer, composer, author, poet, and film director, who became prominent in U.S. documentary photojournalism in the 1940s through 1970s—particularly in issues of civil rights, poverty and African Americans—and in glamour photography. He is best remembered for his iconic photos of poor Americans during the 1940s (taken for a federal government project), for his photographic essays for ''Life'' magazine, and as the director of the films '' Shaft, Shaft's Big Score'' and the semiautobiographical ''The Learning Tree''. Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is an American trumpeter, composer, teacher, and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Delfeayo Marsalis (; born July 28, 1965) is an American jazz trombonist, record producer and educator. Life and career Marsalis was born in New Orleans, the son of Dolores (née Ferdinand) and Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., a pianist and music professor. Aaron Eugene Fletcher (born February 25, 1996) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He played college baseball for the University of Houston. Fletcher was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB draft. He previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates. ''Down Beat'' magazine's Critics' Poll named him 'Rising Star on Tenor Saxophone' in 2010 and 'Rising Star on Soprano Saxophone' in 2008.
