Hal Smalley
Harold V. Smalley (born November 22, 1946) is an American politician who served one term in the Alaska House of Representatives. Biography Smalley was born in 1946 in Hood River, Oregon. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1965, and attended Clatsop Community College from 1965 until 1967. He later transferred to the Oregon College of Education (now known as Western Oregon University), graduating in 1969. In 1970, Smalley moved to Napakiak, Alaska, a small community of mostly Yup'ik Alaska Natives, where he taught at the Napakiak Bureau of Indian Affairs Day School. In 1972, Smalley moved to nearby Kwigillingok, again teaching with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He moved to Kenai in 1974, serving as Director of Student Affairs of the Kenai Native Association, and later teaching with the Kenai Peninsula School District. Mark Hodgins
Mark D. Hodgins (born September 18, 1947) is an American politician who served one term in the Alaska House of Representatives. Biography Hodgins was born in Los Angeles in 1947. He graduated from Cascade High School in Everett, Washington in 1965 and served in the Alaska National Guard from 1966 until 1972. Hodgins later studied at the University of Alaska and at Kenai Peninsula Community College. Hodgins served in the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly from 1987 until 1992. He unsuccessfully ran for the House in 1992 and 1994, both times losing to Mike Navarre, but won in 1996 when Navarre decided to retire. Soldotna, Alaska
Soldotna is a city in the Kenai Peninsula Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. At the 2020 census, the population was 4,342, up from 4,163 in 2010. It is the seat of the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Soldotna is located in the Southcentral portion of Alaska on the central-western portion of the Kenai Peninsula. The city limits span 7 square miles along the Kenai River, which empties into the Cook Inlet in the nearby city of Kenai. Soldotna is located on the western edge of the vast Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area spanning nearly 2 million acres and home to bears, moose, caribou, sheep, and many fish and bird species. Homer News
The ''Homer News'' is a weekly newspaper published in Homer, Alaska since 1964. The newspaper began circulation in January 1964. Founders Hall and Marion Thorn had moved a few years earlier to Homer, where Hal's parents were longtime residents. In the Thorns' hands, the Homer News was a product of the battle over incorporation. Its own motto, "Aims for Progress," reflected the views of those who saw incorporation as a step into the modern age. Homer News switched its name to Homer Weekly News from 1973 to 1976 and back to Homer News on 1976. Now 55 years later and several ownership changes later, the newspaper is still serving the original goal of reporting the local news.
